More than 80 percent of the world’s population own a smart phone. As a matter of fact, a third of these smart phone owners depend on it for survival. Many have their businesses on Smart phone apps and websites or blogs, many are developers, many work as freelancers over their phones, many get vital information on this phones, etc. There are tons of reasons why people are glued to their smart phones, and this will be basically because there are also tons of things that the smart phone is capable of.
It is safe to say that the world has been compressed into smart phones. You can practically live indoors for months with your smart phone and get all you need on it. You can work online, get paid online, purchase online and request home delivery, you can study online and you can even transfer funds online. With a smart phone, there’s really no reason to step out, except for the purpose of stepping out (although this is not suitable for everyone).
However, how did we get here? What are the milestones that made this devices so valuable in this age?
CAMERA – The first camera phone ever made was made in Japan in the year 2000, after which Samsung also made theirs. Since this time, different brands have started making camera phones and they have improved over time to the current amazing high definition picture quality cameras that come with smart phones these days.
Nokia has been a brand that is reputable for their phone cameras. Apart from amazing camera capacity, they also integrate great inbuilt editing features to make photographs look professional.
GPS – In 1999, Benefon launched a phone that had inbuilt GPS features. It was called the Benefon Esc. After few years, other brands followed suit and the GPS technology continued to grow because it could only read the user within few feet at inception. This is the beginning of the location based services that now exist in transportation applications and maps which help users to navigate their way through an unfamiliar territory.
TOUCHSCREENS – The first touch screen phone was made in 1992 and it was the IBM Simon. This was also widely referred to as the first smartphone. It was a huge deviation from the norm back in the days, but now it is more like a primitive PDA. Later in 2007, Apple redefined the abilities and capabilities of the smartphone touchscreen by adding various gesture recognitions and has been one of the leading interfaces ever since as they keep innovating.
ANDROID – HTC launched the world’s first Android phone in October 2008. It was a different innovation to what was in existence at that time, but wasn’t a match for Apple’s iOS achievements at the period. This was a flag to Apple that there is a big competitor in the market, but they have both survived the times with different innovations.
The smartphone did not get to this level at once, it was a gradual development. However, watch out for more innovations because these developments just started.
