If technology is finding ways to involve himself with every industry that there is, is there a chance that it won’t jump in on the industry with trillions of dollars in the US alone? The manufacturing industry holds a very large share of the world’s economy. If technology crashes, a lot of things will be affected, but we will still survive. However, if manufacturing crashes, there is a very tiny chance of survival for the human race.
We depend on technology for so many things, including shelter, food and clothing. This is to say that the manufacturing industry is almost directly responsible for keeping the human race together. This industry has see great days and literal blood baths, but it still thrives. It is constantly evolving, and one of the major factors of this progressive change, is technology. Now that technology in itself is going through some drastic and highly futuristic transformations, what is or will be its toll on the manufacturers and their industry? Consumers are experiencing these transformations into a fast and more convenient world, through various channels and they want it in manufacturing too.
Some of the technological advancements highlighted below have affected this industry and improved it in ways which will be discussed.
THE INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT) AND BIG DATA
The implementation of CMMS (computerized maintenance management systems), has made the use of the internet of things very effective by connecting various devices via different remote, wireless means, for effective and efficient communication. For manufacturers and the manufacturing industry, factories and factory equipment are connected to and with the internet to enable remote control of huge and complex plants (no matter how big or complex it is), and automation. Reducing human labor, increasing speed and ensuring quality and accuracy. With the IOT, a factory can operate on its own, no matter how big the production volume is.
You must have heard of smart phones, if you haven’t heard of other smart equipment like smart cars and watches or even smart doors. The world of technology is going from garbage in garbage out, to nothing in solution out. Before, you need to tell computers what to do, but now they don’t need you to. They have been enabled to observe the situation, take records, analyses and provide solutions to possible problems and/or needs. The most amazing part is that they do all these in micro-seconds. Can you remember the first feeling you had when you saw how mentally capable Kyle XY was? You can go through that feeling again. Technological devices are now being made to help humans without the humans asking for their help. Manufacturers are creating these technologies for the consumption of the world and to also make their jobs easier.
WHAT HAPPENS TO MANUFACTURERS AND THE WORK FORCE?
Since things are getting more automated, there is no doubt that people would soon begin to lose jobs and the work force needed will reduce. However, that is seeing it from one angle. For another end, technology is not erasing the workforce but giving it more value by redesigning its work description and work pattern. As a matter of facts, manufacturing workers will be paid more than they are now, in the nearest future.
