Rumors have taken rounds in the Internet about the possibility that Marvel may be featuring it’s first ever gay superhero, prompted by an article by the Hashtag Show. Throwing the idea into the Internet had spiked interest over the matter, making the subject gain more wind, and now the rumors may be starting to solidify. Variety reached out to Victoria Alonso, production head for Marvel, during Captain Marvel’s debut, and she said that the world indeed is ready for a gay superhero to take center-stage.
Regarding The Eternals, where talks about the lead being a gay man, Alonso also shared her views, saying that they are confident about casting the best Eternals cast that they can gather, and that they’d make an announcement about it as soon as they can.
Diversity is key for Marvel nowadays, as they’ve just come up with 2 of the most diverse films with Captain Marvel, with its sole female lead, and Black Panther, which won an Academy. To have a gay superhero next, which puts the spotlight on LGBT inclusivity, seems to be a favored next step for the company. “If we don’t put pedal to the metal on the diversity and the inclusivity, we will not have continued success. Our determination is to have that for all of the people out there watching our movies.” Alonso said. Apparently, there are no names of actors mentioned yet. But let’s say Zachary Quinto or Matt Bomer shouldn’t be a bad choice. Regardless of who gets that historic job, we’re just excited to see diversity in the superhero line up.
