So, brides-to-be, you don’t have to wait until the wedding just to wear a white, fancy designer dress. Pull out your inspiration boards and take some notes, and remember, not all that glitter is gold, and not all that is white is necessarily pure.
Presidential Pearl - 2016
With beauty comes duty, and with elegance comes a role. Way back in 2016, Melania Trump looked flawless as she stepped out on the red carpet in a conservative white Mugler bias-cut gown at the Time 100 Gala. While white isn’t the easiest color to pull off, especially in a dress, Trump loves to wear the color on many occasions.
The very long slit running down her neverending legs emphasizes how elegant and graceful this woman is, and as it turns out, a dress that you would expect to see in black or red does remarkably well in white too.
Lark's Bell (And Not the Wedding One) - 2019
Lark Voorhies rose to fame playing Lisa on the ABC sitcom, "Saved by the Bell." Many days have passed since we saw her adorning the high school corridors, playing best friends with Zack Morris and the gang. After the show, the actor pretty much disappeared from Hollywood. She spent more than a decade away from the spotlight, spending her time mostly painting.
She has recently appeared in several premiers and red-carpet events. This was taken at the "Robot Chicken" season 10 premiere in September 2019. Lark is wearing a cute white mini-dress that would be perfect for a casual occasion or even for a wild night out.
When You Have Faith, You Can't Go Wrong - 2015
It is pretty uncommon for stars in the music industry to have both a successful career and relationship, but these two proved that this isn’t always the case. It doesn't happen so often, so when it does, we cherish it. In 2008, Tim McGraw appeared in the Oscar-nominated film "The Blind Side" alongside Sandra Bullock, while in 2010, Faith Hill recorded songs for the soundtrack of the film "Country Strong."
Of course, Faith and Tim were there for each other, arm in arm, during both events. And we can't ignore the stunning piece Faith has on. The unique pattern turns this simple design into a neverending classic.
The White Met Gala - 2014
The gorgeous singer chose to show off her perfectly toned stomach in this broad-shouldered white Stella McCartney crop top and a long skirt that left little to the imagination. She chose this look for the 2014 Met Gala. Rihanna is the queen of putting a red-carpet spin on her style and flaunting what her momma gave her in a simple but stunning way.
She surely turned many heads on this evening, as she often does. Stella only dressed a few stars for this evening, but of course, Rihanna was given the crème de la crème of the designer's couture, and she looks absolutely stunning.
One Piece Wonder - 2017
Angela Sarafyan took provocative to a whole new level when she wore just the front and back of a dress at the Toast to Young Hollywood party in 2017. Not everyone could get away with this, but Sarafyan did. But in all seriousness, we know that the actress is wearing an entire dress, it's just that from this angle, that’s not the impression we get.
Had the front and back of this dress been sown together without the sheer panel, no woman in the world could fit in it. Not sure if this would work as a wedding dress, however, you never know. In some cultures, it could.
Victoria's White Secret - 2019
This model might be super young, but she’s already been a favorite Victoria’s Secret Angel for a few years now. Because of that, she’s no stranger to glamorous events and red carpets. And she’s definitely not scared to take a few risks while rocking the spotlight. Romee Strijd is one of the most beautiful models spread on all magazine covers, and it only takes one look to understand why.
The photographers couldn’t get enough of her at the 72nd annual 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where Romee attended the opening ceremony and screening of "The Dead Don’t Die" wearing this form-fitting, bold gown.
Classic in Cannes - 2017
Emily Ratajkowski pulled off revealing in an elegant way when she showed up to the Cannes Film Festival in this beautiful dress, but to be honest, the actress and model could really pull anything off. It doesn't take much to create a seemingly simple yet elegant look, and with looks like hers, no wonder she has escalated the ladder of fame so fast.
Not only is the dress (and necklace) that Ratajkowski is wearing stunning but the pose she is striking only added on, making her look as if she had been pulled out of a set of the movie.
Jennifer My Best Friend - 2004
Let's go back a few years before the Brangelina episode took over our lives. Things looked different, "The Incredibles" was just hitting the theaters, and Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt were still a couple. Ah, the good times. While walking the red carpet at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival with Brad, Jennifer Aniston wore this stunning Valentino gown.
Laden with beads, this shimmering halter dress showed off her figure and her slender frame perfectly. It also showed off her hair, which has since become one of her most famous assets. With matching jewels, she became a shining beacon of luxury.
Queen Victoria - 2008
Back in 2008, Victoria Beckham was in her prime. With her Spice Girls fame behind her, this was the year that Posh Spice started her famous fashion line – so she had to pull out all the stops for her Met Gala appearance. And that was not the only thing she pulled out.
Standing alongside her hunky husband, Victoria donned this vintage Giorgio Armani gown which looked absolutely stunning in the process. Everything from the lace detail to the slit in the middle of the dress showed off her figure and complimented her bright red lips and her sleek updo.
Who Said a Hat Won't Work? - 1999
Celine Dion has always been a fashion icon, and she has never been afraid to try something new – even if it doesn’t quite work. She did just that at the 1999 Academy Awards when she wore this white Galliano pantsuit. Rather than wearing it the way that it was designed, Celine decided to mix things up and wear it backward instead.
This meant that she was left with a plain front section, while the buttons and the lapels could be seen on the back. Fans just didn’t quite understand her fashion decision on this occasion, but who cares? We love her anyway.
When Uma Thurman Went Lacroix - 2004
Fashion is subjective, but it’s fair to say that most people can agree when something falls short of the fashion mark. There is a limit to what one can wear, even if you are a mega superstar. This was the case for Uma Thurman’s outfit to the 2004 Academy Awards. Dressed in a Christian Lacroix gown, it featured all kinds of lace, embellishments, and numerous forms of layering.
The whole thing was finished off with a blue belt – and people weren’t convinced. She quickly made her way onto the “Worst Dressed” lists, and many thought that the whole thing just missed the luxury mark expected of a red carpet event.
Lorde Wearing St. John - 2021
A lot of people know Lorde as a great music sensation. Well, that is mainly because she is one. She is one of the most talented artists in the industry. However, people often forget that this musical sensation loves to wear vintage fashion and go thrifting. One of her favorite pieces of thrifted clothing was this St. John's suit that she got for $50.
Even though that might seem like a bit much for a thrifted item, Lorde clarified that it is only the upper end of what she would pay. Now you tell us, how can this extraordinary woman wear something that costs less than 100$ and look like a million?
Going to the Opera - 1992
In the early ‘90s, Geena Davis was at the height of her career (and that wasn't a tall-people joke, she really was one of the busiest actresses in the industry). While many expected her to turn up to the Academy Award ceremony in 1992 in a sleek and luxurious gown, the opposite happened. The actress instead donned a dress designed by Ruth Meyers and Bill Hargate that was short at the front and long at the back.
As if that wasn’t enough, there were a lot of ruffles and opera gloves to contend with. The whole thing shook many fans to the core, and they couldn’t believe what they were seeing.
Gaga Going White - 2010
We can't have a list of dresses without including Lady Gaga, no matter what the color of the dress is. If we could, we would have added all of her outfit choices to the list of the most uncomfortable red carpet looks. We're just lucky that what seemed to be the most uncomfortable of them all happened to be white.
Gaga donned this weird and wacky ensemble to the 2010 Brit Awards, and the Francesco Scognamiglio design certainly went down a storm. As if the giant wig wasn’t enough to weigh Gaga down, we have a feeling that this huge amount of material probably did it for her.
Royal Touch - 2019
Although Kate Middleton and the rest of the Royal Family don’t always attend events surrounding popular culture, both Kate and her husband made their way to the BAFTA Awards in 2019. Not one to shy away from designer labels, the Duchess of Cambridge wore one of her favorite designers that night — Alexander McQueen.
Alexander has been by Middleton's side for a few years now and has managed to bring out the best in the stunning princess. This white one-shoulder gown featured light and flowing material and allowed Kate the chance to show off the beauty and simplicity of the design. She looked stunning, and Prince William didn’t scrub up too badly, either.
Walk Like an Egyptian - 2019
It’s long been thought that Margot Robbie is hot and cold with her style. Sometimes she can get it just right, and other times she misses the mark. However, it’s fair to say that she got her 2019 SAG Awards outfit just right. For this event, Margot wore this figure-hugging Chanel gown.
There's nothing special about the cut, and it falls in perfection on her body, but the Middle Eastern designed adornments covering her upper part and breaking the dress into pieces just work. Featuring a fairly low neckline and gold detailing on the top and the bottom of the dress, it was simple in its creation but also extremely complicated.
Lupita Nyong'o Is One of Kind - 2015
One of the most popular stars to have hit the red carpet in recent years is Lupita Nyong'o. The gorgeous Kenyan-Mexican artist is just about as diverse as you can get, and it only takes a look at her acting roles to get any proof you might need.
She can be seen here formally dressed and accompanied by her beautiful brother Peter. Peter has quite a large Instagram following as he knows he looks good and enjoys sharing that with the world by sporting anything from a suit to a Sari and even dabbles occasionally in different shades of lipstick in his pictures.
Camila Cabello's White Havana Night - 2015
Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello can certainly produce some large sounds with her vocals, but she’s actually on the smaller side. At just 5-foot-2, she’s almost a foot shorter than her current boyfriend, Shawn Mendes. Now, Cabello may be small in size, but when it comes to her sense of fashion, there is not much we can say. This outfit has it all.
Camila manages to get away with a petite cropped top that, on any other day, would make her look even smaller than she is, however, the extra-long multi-patterned pants really balance everything well. We love the oriental lace.
The Baroness - 2013
Actress Isla Fisher (not to be confused with her doppelganger Amy Adams), looks incredibly gorgeous in her ivory-white classic piece. What seems to be a simple day-to-day, any-event will-do kind of dress, after having a close look, Fisher wouldn't look better in anything else.
It's a little hard to see, but this dress is anything but simple. The back part has an interesting design to it, with layers of fabric smoothly falling down. More textile is wrapped around her waist, giving it an interesting and unique touch. Not to mention how well it compliments her red hair! Without a doubt, this could be your next wedding dress.
Jennifer Lawrence Is Stuck in the Middle - 2015
Jennifer Lawrence, the "Hunger Games" star, is seen here in a stunning gown, standing between her co-stars — Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. Beautiful Lawrence presents this exquisite piece at the Microsoft Theater in 2015. It has a clear and classic line, however, the many details at the top part of the dress are what make this so very special.
The neckline is cut almost down to her waist, yet it manages to remain modest and prestige. The golden ornaments on both sides of the sleeveless gown upgrade the total look and turn this into something only suited for a true star.
Kay Perry Is Fashioning a National Identity - 2010
At the 2010 opening of the "American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity" exhibition, Katy Perry stole the show. She wore a spotlight dress which, on its own, was fairly simple. Done with one shoulder and accents of pale pink, it was lined with rope lights that glowed in different colors.
Again, the getup received mixed reviews, with many saying they liked the dress but the large necklace she chose to accessorize with was overkill. What do you think? The neckpiece she wore might have been one step too far, and even if this wasn't to everyone's liking, no one could take their eye off her.
Perfect Polished Radwanska - 2014
They say that Polish people are quite tough, but this one is also extremely beautiful. Meet Urszula Radwanska, a highly accomplished tennis player who reached 29th place in the worldwide rankings. She has won multiple doubles titles, as well as four single titles. The beautiful athlete is a sister to Agnieszka Radwańska, who actually reached number two in the worldwide rankings back in 2012.
Outside of the tennis court, Urszula Radwanska is also a savvy businesswoman and owns her own brand of luxury handbags, which she is seen holding in the picture. With such a great sense of fashion, it is no surprise we caught her in such a perfect dress that only emphasizes her perfect dimensions.
The Only Way Is Up for Claressa Shields - 2013
Claressa Shields is one of the toughest, most intimidating female boxers in the world. She is the undisputed middleweight champion as of mid-2019 after going up two weight classes throughout her career. Shields won five gold medals between 2012 and 2016, starting with the 2012 London Olympics up to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. But forget sports, what about this dress?
Shields became the first woman in history to win a gold medal in Olympic boxing, which explains why even her dress at the BET Honors 2013 had to be the best she could wear. To some, this may seem a little too much, but for such an extraordinary woman, the golden sparks, the silk ribbon tied around her waist, and the asymmetrical length suits her personality to perfection.
Sat Hello to Sydney Leroux - 2014
This white dress can only be worn by someone who has a perfect athletic body, just like Sydney Leroux. Leroux wore this tight dress at the ESPYS pre-party in 2014. Leroux is a talented and gifted soccer player and Olympic gold medalist. She's currently the forward for the Orlando Pride team in the National Women's Soccer League. Outside of her successful professional career, she also has an extremely popular Instagram account with more than a million followers.
The American-Canadian soccer beauty is wearing a dress that fits perfectly on her strong and athletic body, and she can show off the results of hard work and determination. The dress is simple yet revealing, with an interesting pattern all over. Oh, and the shoes! We love!
Jolie, Jolie Jolieeeee - 2019
Before actresses like Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett Johansson stole our hearts and drove us to theaters, we had Angelina Jolie dazzle us in roles like Lara Croft ("Tomb Raider"), Mrs. Smith ("Mr. & Mrs. Smith"), and Maleficent ("Maleficent"). Besides an incredible acting and directing career, Jolie is noted for wearing one of the most exquisite dresses on our list. It may not be pure white but it is fit for any bride-to-be.
For years Jolie has been dazzling us on the red carpet, and the European premiere of "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" in 2019 was no exception. The silver gown has a silky cape dripping down her shoulder, upscaling Jolie to almost royalty.
Graceful Garner on the Red Carpet - 2003
Here we have "Alias" star Jennifer Garner at the 2003 Emmys, where she received her second of four nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The actress, also known for "13 Going on 30," graced the red carpet in a creamy halter gown with a chic sheen from top to bottom.
The small details on the dress are what make all the difference and turn this piece into one that stands out. With no decorations or ornaments, the silky fabric shines, and the small triangle cutouts above the waistline and low back are the sophisticated touches to something that could have remained bland but didn't.
Polka Dotted to Perfection - 2009
"Boys Don’t Cry" star Chloë Sevigny entranced red carpet spectators with a translucent polka dot gown by Issac Mizrahi. The actress accented her sheer, one-shoulder dress with a shiny yellow-gold bracelet and a brooch on the hip. The dress wraps the actress in great comfort, and the loose fabric on the side and bottom of the dress couldn't be more precise.
This dress was made especially for Chloë Sevigny. It emphasizes her feminine and natural curves. A white dress can sometimes do wrong on a very pale skin tone and wash it out, however, in this case, she just shines even more.
She Is Worth It - 2012
Jessica Paré graced the red carpet draped in this Roman goddess gown by Jason Wu. The "Mad Men" actress said she attended the 2012 Emmy Awards ceremony thrilled that the show was nominated for 17 Emmy Awards. She sure looked worthy of an Oscar.
We have witnessed Jessica Paré on many occasions looking absolutely stunning, however, this beautiful white dress takes them all. Our favorite part has to be the sculpted top. Also, that black belt around the waist is the perfect way to make the design pop. Sticking to classics, Paré went with a bold lip and winged eyeliner, and diamond earrings.
Red Carpet Return - 2022
After the scary news about Hailey’s health condition and surgery, Justin and Hailey decided to make their return to the red carpet by attending the 2022 Grammy Awards together. Justin was nominated for eight Grammys, including Album of the Year for his album, "Justice." But we are not here for Justin, we are here for Hailey's white dress.
Thankfully, Hailey seems to be doing better and is back to her fashionable self. She adorned her partner by wearing this superb strapless dress that was loose on the upper part and made us wonder if there was anything she was hiding underneath.
Their Red Carpet Debut - 2008
These days, few things are as official as relationship announcements on Instagram. But when two people appear together on the red carpet – now that’s what you call a celebrity couple debut. In February 2008, Legend and Teigen made their first red-carpet appearance at the 50th Grammy Awards. The two were evidently smitten, and everyone could see it.
Teigen confessed that she wasn’t the biggest fan of her red-carpet look, but we tend to disagree. The chemistry between the two eclipsed everything else, and the ivory gown was worn to perfection. The asymmetrical sleeve and the shoulder strap take the center of attention.
The Goodwill Dress - 2001
When Eva Mendes had to attend her very first movie premiere of "The Others" back in 2001, when she was still not as famous, she decided to take matters into her own hands. That is right, she went in and bought herself a dress. Not just any dress, Eva Mendes made her very first red carpet debut with a dress that she got from Goodwill for just $6.
She could not afford the expensive looks that her colleagues were going for, so she rocked a Goodwill dress. Mendes even did her own makeup! Needless to say, she definitely owned the look.
Get Down to Business - 2002
Let’s be honest, with her stunning good looks, it's hard for Penélope Cruz to make any outfit look bad. Whatever she wears and whenever she wears it, she looks the business. It could be the latest styles on the red carpet or serving as the face of some of the fashion industry’s most exclusive brands, she has an innate sense of style that cannot be denied.
It was this interest in fashion that inspired Penelope to open Amarcord — a store in Madrid’s swanky Salamanca area — in 2004. Like the star’s own personal style, the shop stocks both casual and more expensive pieces. What seems to be a white overcoat with two black belts is actually a dress that is designed to perfection.
Breakfast With a Legend - 1990
Hollywood legend Audrey Hepburn who is beloved for her role in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” was at the 47th Golden Globe Awards for a special reason. The golden era actress was honored that night with the special Cecile B. DeMille award. She looks absolutely stunning in a white satin column gown. Hepburn’s sheer elegance gave that 1990 ceremony a special ambiance.
Audrey wore a timeless piece. A pure white gown that would never go out of fashion and remain classic for eternity, just like the star herself. Hepburn represented beauty and glamour and didn't need more than a plain yet elegant dress to stand out.
When Paltrow Went With Pitt - 1996
Way before Jennifer Aniston and long before Chris Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt were an item. At the 53rd Golden Globe Awards, Paltrow shone in a pale white, Calvin Klein slip gown. The sequined ensemble includes the matching wrap she is holding. The dainty dress style presents one of the decade’s fashion high points, and this design could be seen everywhere and on everyone. It wasn't so unique, however, Paltrow made it glow.
On her other hand, she holds Brad Pitt. Before Jen and Angelina, these two were THE ’90s couple. They dated for two years and even got engaged!
The Look of a Winner - 2004
Diane Keaton looked elegant and sophisticated on the red carpet at the 2004 Golden Globes. In all white, she wore a Nehru jacket, long gloves, and an extravagant string of pearls. She looks winning, and win she did. Keaton won the Best Actress prize for “Something’s Gotta Give.”
Accepting the honor, she gushed over the fact that she had the rare opportunity to play the female love interest at her ripe age, almost ending her 7th decade in life. With those sparkling boots and silky, glossy gloves, Keaton knocked off a few years and blended in flawlessly with the younger generation.
The Greek Goddess - 2007
Sienna Miller’s Grecian gown was the talk of the red carpet at the 2007 Golden Globes. Miller is dressed in Marchesa in gold and white. The gathered scoop neckline is a toga-like look. The Greek goddess theme is tied together with a braid crown encircling her head like a sunny blonde halo.
Gentle and almost unnoticed makeup only enriched Miller's appearance on the carpet, which was both fascinating and heartwarming. Miller garnered some serious looks with “Factory Girl,” and here, she was making one of her entertainment fashion debuts. Miller would be nominated in 2008 for a Rising Star BAFTA.
Miley's First Globe - 2009
Miley Cyrus was absolutely in awe to have had the wonderful fortune to be able to walk the red carpet at the Golden Globes. She was 16 at the time and thrilled to partake in one of the entertainment industry’s top events. Obviously, most 16-year-olds don’t have Golden Globe nominations! It was a dream come true.
Cyrus attended with her parents. She wore a white strapless gown with sheer layering over a large gold print and hair cascading in ringlets. The white fabric adorning the golden ornaments shifts the dress from being a mature evening gown to becoming an innocent, young woman's dress with a touch of modesty.
Super Stunning Macpherson - 2012
Supermodel Elle Macpherson brought her A-game to the 2012 Golden Globe Awards and we would expect nothing less. Modeling a Zac Posen mermaid gown with a tulle bottom, Macpherson’s curves were nicely accentuated. She styled the eye-catching garment with a gold Kotur clutch, bulky diamond-ornated bracelets on her wrist, big golden earrings, and natural-looking makeup.
Wearing her hair flowing down in soft curls added to her very feminine, mermaid-like appearance. This dress definitely made an impact. At first, it may look a bit too extravaganza, but once you get to know the person wearing it, it is clear that no other dress would do.
She Made the Dress Shine - 2013
With Ryan Seacrest on her arm and donning a stunning Monique Lhuillier frock, Julianne Hough was crushing it! The gold and white gown was marvelous all over. It was decorated in sparkling gold studs and had a skirt of white tulle, culminating in a luxurious train. So sophisticated!
The actress and dancer made famous thanks to her appearances in “Dancing with the Stars,” nabbed her first big role in “Burlesque.” She has also been seen dancing and strutting her stuff in films like "Rock of Ages," "Dirty Grandpa," and "Curve," so there is more to Julianne than just beautiful dresses.
Let Us Go Downton - 2013
The “Downton Abbey” star looked simply regal on the Golden Globes red carpet in 2013. Michelle Dockery stunned us in Alexandre Vauthier couture. The gown by the Parisian-based designer featured a gold, high-neck bodice and white skirt. The bodice was made of heavy lace embroidery layered on a sheer fabric. It was considered a risk choosing the brand, but she pulled it off magnificently and was heralded by fashion critics.
Not only did Michelle Dockery dazzle on the red carpet, but she is becoming a favorite to watch on the screens too. She starred in "Hanna" and in the adaptation of "Anna Karenina" where she performed remarkably.
Not a Bride Anymore - 2019
Once a power couple, Brazilian supermodel Gisele and her New England Patriots quarterback husband, Tom Brady used to have everyone's eyes raised at them. None of them comes from a country with a monarchy but they were definitely the closest thing to royalty America could have.
This pre-divorce photo of the two was taken at the 2019 Hollywood for Science Gala. At this point, they had been married for about ten years but that didn't stop Gisele from looking as bride-like as she possibly could. Sadly, the couple has since split. The silver lining, however, is that the hottest people in the industry are now single and up for grabs!
101 Dalmatians - 2021
Compared to some of HBC's other looks, this one doesn't even seem all that eccentric. Still, this white ruffly gown with black polka dots perfectly embodies the quirky, free spirit that is Helena Bonham Carter. The actress was 55 years old when she attended the 2021 BAFTAs, arm-in-arm with her boyfriend, Norwegian writer Rye Dag Holmboe, who is 21 years younger than her.
Considering she's so young at heart and he is "an old soul in a young man's body," according to Bonham Carter, it looks like a match made in Tim Burton's version of heaven! (Or his version of hell, depending on who you're asking.)
No Such Thing as Too Old - 2016
Susan Sarandon let everyone know that 70 was the new 20 when she wore multiple eye-catching looks on the red carpet in 2016. At the SAG awards that year, Sarandon wore a chic white suit but swapped out a top for a black bra. It was a controversial outfit, sparking a Twitter debate between the actress and Piers Morgan, but nothing compared to what Sarandon wore throughout the year.
Sarandon has starred in many movies and showed off her talent and the varied characters she has played over the years. "The Big Wedding," "Dead Man Walking," and "Stepmom" are only some of the big names she is recognized for.
There Is No Stopping Jada - 2022
In her first red carpet appearance since the infamous 2022 Oscars incident, Jada Pinkett Smith returned to the public eye and she did it with a bang. The actress wore a bold high-low gown from Stéphane Rolland, kitted out with embroidered crystals and a long, dramatic, ruffly train.
Even though there's a lot of fabric going on, the star, who is notably petite, stunned and didn't let the look overshadow her natural beauty at all. Jada's face is unique and exquisite and shows that no long locks are needed when you have such a captivating look and a special face.
Christina Out of the 1950s — 2007
Chris Evans and Christina Ricci were a super duper couple. In 2007 Chris and Christina walked the Met Gala carpet together, and although they never spoke openly about their relationship, something was going on between them. Two months after the grand red carpet appearance, the two decided to end what had just started, and each went on to find someone else to escort them to the next grand event.
But forget boyfriends, let's talk about that dress. This white gown looks as if it was pulled out of the 1950s and still remains a classic piece. Christina Ricci does only good to the dress, which makes her shine no less than any other woman who walked the carpet that day.
Double Trouble - 2018
When the “SexyBack” singer married actress Jessica Biel, it seemed that they had one of the most adorable relationships. The talented couple was known for their frequent appearances on the red carpet and adorable social media posts. At the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2018, Biel wore a beautiful dress with a crescent pattern from top to bottom. The transparent fabric upgraded the simple cut, which ended with a unique and interesting design.
In recent years, Justin has come under fire for his past behavior with his ex, Britney Spears. He also ignited a gossip storm when he was snapped getting a bit too close to his “Palmer” co-star, actress Alisha Wainwright. In response to the criticism, the couple admits they work hard to weather the “ups and downs.”
Mermaid Mara - 2012
Given this was her debut appearance at the Academy Awards after her burst-out role in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” Rooney Mara started strong. The cream-colored Givenchy Haute Couture gown was everything we could have hoped for from the often goth-leaning actress. We love that she kept some goth elements like the straight, jet-black hairstyle and the dramatic red lip.
The mermaid cut was specifically designed for her by the famous dressmaker. Rooney Mara has been spotted on the red carpet wearing different styles and colors, however, this white dress is probably one of her most modest yet charming and impressive looks.
Hollywood Hepburn - 1975
Literally the epitome of classic Hollywood glamour, Audrey Hepburn absolutely stunned at the 1975 Academy Awards red carpet in a dazzling Givenchy number. The charming gown displayed an intricately beaded top with a peekaboo cutout in the middle and is embellished with a white bow. The beading is juxtaposed with a clean white skirt, which makes for a balanced, compelling look.
In her prime, Audrey Hepburn was the leading woman in the industry. Men admired her, and women envied her, for she had it all. She was stunningly beautiful and led fashion trends. She was the diva of her era.
The H&M Fashion Icon - 2014
Nicole Richie is a beautiful woman who is also a fashion icon to many young ladies out there. Her look at the Baby2Baby Gala back in 2014 was even more of a reason why so many people look up to her as a style icon. Richie proved that there is no need to get the expensive stuff out of the closet.
She went into the gala looking as stunning as ever, not in some designer dress that she had made, but in a very affordable and fashion-forward H&M mock neck dress that came down to her ankles. Incredibly, the dress she wore was just $40!
The Woman of the 1990s - 1995
In the 1990s, Elizabeth Hurley was everywhere. She was a rising star, and she was part of the famous Hugh Grant and his other woman scandal. She donned a completely sequined Versace gown in 1995, but this look is so timeless that it could no doubt be worn at the Academy Awards even now.
Hurley chose a thin double spaghetti strap dress and a matching clutch while keeping the rest of the accessories to a minimum, emphasizing the decadence of the gown. Even to this day, although not heard of so often, she is considered one of the most beautiful women in the industry.
Fishing Marion - 2008
At the 2008 Academy Awards, Marion Cotillard looks like a modern mermaid in this Jean Paul Gaultier dress. She finished her look with a Chopard diamond necklace and ring and a Daniel Swarovski clutch. Seeing this reminds us of how the "La Vie en Rose" actress completely immerses herself in her movie roles.
The French actress has been glowing in her parts for more than 30 years and is one of her nation's leading actresses. These days Marion is investing most of her time in Newtopia, her new production company, which she established together with filmmaker Cyril Dion and producer Magali Payen.
Homemade by Kim - 1990
For the more mature generation reading our lines, Kim Basinger was one big name at her time. Her breakthrough came in 1983 in the James Bond movie "Never Say Never Again." Now there is more to Basinger than just blonde hair and great talent. Did you know that Kim Basinger designed this Cinderella-like dress?
She wore it to the 62nd Academy Awards in 1990, where she won the Best Supporting Actress award for the role she played in "L.A Confidential." This debutante-like dress is definitely a little out there, but when you're a star as big as Kim was, you can get away with practically anything.
The Other Side of Gaga - 2016
Lady Gaga always gets away with pushing the boundaries, of course, this time, she chose to do differently at the Academy Awards. She reached out to her designer friend Brandon Maxwell to design an outfit for her to wear to the awards. He made five custom dresses for the event, and this white jumpsuit was the one that she picked. It has a very classy and timeless feel to it.
It would have come as no surprise if Gaga would have chosen something more outrageous. However, her choice of a sophisticated and charming look just proves that there is no need to judge the book by its cover, and even the most outrageous people have a calmer person within.
Supermodel in White - 1993
Cindy Crawford is one of the most beautiful supermodels to ever live. In the last few years, she has been seen promoting a skincare line, and it doesn’t look like she’s aged one bit. You may be wondering what a supermodel like Cindy would wear to her first Academy Awards. Well, if you’re Cindy, you could wear a trash bag and still look like a million bucks. In the end, Cindy opted for a bodycon Herve Leger dress to show off that amazing model figure.
These were the 1990s, and back then, the fashion that ruled was tight on the body and not leaving too much for the imagination. And no matter how revealing the dress is, Crawford still looks elegant and prestigious.
Go West - 2015
Like Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian is known for her appearances on KUWTK. She has always been someone who has worn questionable and revealing outfits to events that shows off the curves of her body. However, Kanye, who is not only a rapper but also a designer, made sure she glowed on the red carpet. Kim would have shone independently and regardless of what she would have worn, however, the dress she had on at the 2015 Net Gala was remarkable, even by Kardashian standards.
We are not sure where the dress starts and where it ends. The diamonds cover all necessary areas, and the rest of her body hides behind transparent silk fabric. The peacock-themed tail turned this diva into a goddess, and her overall show was breathtaking.
Not Only a Dress - 2003
A red carpet look doesn't always have to be a dress, and Jessica Simpson is living proof. In 2003 Jessica Simpson had already rocked an all-white silk pantsuit on the VMA red carpet. Simpson was the picture of sophistication and class in an Emporio Armani ensemble paired with understated silver accessories.
Far from outrageous, the singer chose vintage glam to make a statement, and boy, did it leave a lasting impression! Simpson was once one of the leading names in the industry and a public figure to admire, not only by the younger generation. The stunning white suit she had on might have been more than 20 years ago, however, it's a classic that would work these days too.
Swan Dress - 2001
You can write a book about the most outrageous moments on the red carpet. The names and big stars of Hollywood take advantage of this one night and create a moment to remember. One of the most iconic and cringe-worthy moments on the red carpet was when Björk showed up to the 2001 Academy Awards dressed in a swan dress. Apart from the dress itself, Björk was awkwardly embarrassed when people didn't seem to get the "artistic" element of her outfit.
She brought along six ostrich eggs with her, dropping them carefully on the red carpet. Other celebs' bodyguards kept picking them up and handing them back to her, thinking she dropped them by accident.
A Wintery Nightmare - 2017
We appreciate the excruciatingly hard work it must have taken to design and create this fashion piece, but with all due respect to Givenchy, this looks like white sheer fabric with balls of worn-out Styrofoam glued on top. While we love the bottom skirt, covered in little classy white pearls, the upper part looks like it belongs in the costume department of the Narnia films, not on the red carpet of an event.
So you can be Celine Dion, you can be Angelina Jolie, you can be the Queen of England, we really don't care. There are some things that just don't work, and no, not every white dress will pass. Even if you are a Kardashian.
You Don't Have to Be a Bride for White - 1980
The Royal Opera House is a beautiful and iconic building that lends itself perfectly to the artistry of ballet. The royal family is often seen at the Royal Opera House soaking up all that royal art and culture. Princess Anne attended an event at the Royal Opera House in 1980, and what did she choose to wear to the event? A stunning white dress with an intricate, embroidered overlay.
While many may have attended the event, it was Anne’s look that really stole the show. At this time, the princess was already happily married, and the white gown she wore for the casual event (by royal standards) was noticeable and impossible not to mention.
Simple Taryn - 2018
You don't always need a dress that shimmers brightly to help you to stand out, as Taryn Manning proves with her blue and white ensemble. This 2018 look features a white dress she wears under a long blue coat and finishes with blue heels. The "Orange Is the New Black" star initially complained about not having an expensive dress, but she revealed that the dress made her feel beautiful after she tried it on.
So how much did the dress cost, you ask? It was on the cheaper side of the event that evening. She looks great, no one expected her to arrive in a lavish Cinderella gown, and that's $199 well spent on the red carpet!
Racing in White - 2014
Danica Patrick is the world's most popular and accomplished female auto racer. Unlike directly-physical sports like tennis, she is able to compete with men on a level playing field and give many of them a run for their money. Patrick is the only woman to ever win an IndyCar Series race and has consistently broken female records for the sport.
The white dress that she had on for the 2014 ESPY Awards proves that even if you are involved in what is considered a masculine sport, once you slip into one of these dresses, you are all woman! The award-winning driver was NASCAR's most popular driver multiple times and is extremely successful in all areas of her life.
The White Sport in a Dress - 2013
Popular Italian pro tennis player, Camila Giorgi, has had her fair share of wins before her thirtieth birthday. She originates from Macerata, Italy, and currently lives in the small town of Tirrenia. She has defeated the number one tennis players, Caroline Wozniacki, Maria Sharapova, and Victoria Azarenka, and shown just how capable she is.
There was no hiding in the 2013 Roland Garros, and Camila Giorgi is showing off the results of many years of ambition, dedication, and love in a tight white tube dress. She is stunning, not only on the tennis court but also on the red carpet.
Marked With a White Dress - 2004
This next image is waking proof that there are no rules, and if you want to put on a pair of white trainers with a beautiful, elegant white dress, then you can. Halsey wore white from head to toe in a garment inspired by the 80's cult classic "Blade runner." The dress was designed with the movie's female lead in mind and was tailored out of old jackets and dresses.
With cotton satin and stretch silk, Halsey looks classy and edgy at the same time. She has DKNY designers to thank for this successful design and also for making her stand out more than any other woman on the carpet that night.
Emma's Armor - 2016
We won't blame you if you forgot, but Emma Stone was a brunette for a short while. Don't worry; she dyed her hair back to her iconic red. For the Met Gala, The "La La Land" actress went for an armored white dress, which did fit with the night's theme of "Fashion in an Age of Technology." This look wasn't our favorite look of the night, but we are still huge fans of Stone.
The non-white parts (meaning, the corset and shoulder straps) were meant for the "technology" part of the theme. Take a closer look and you will see that there are adorned with microchip-like pieces.
Kirsten and Christian - 2017
Kirsten Dunst has been acting since she was just a young child, appearing in the popular "Interview With a Vampire" film based on the Anne Rice novel as a ten-year-old girl-turned-vampire Claudia, alongside Tom Cruise as Lestat and Brad Pitt as Louis. At the 2017 SAG, After Party, Dunst appeared alongside her brother in a white layered dress that made the actress look tall and trendy. This dress is classy and timeless.
The film, along with many subsequent others, made her a young and successful actress. Comic book fans will recognize her as Spider-Man’s love interest Mary Jane from the original Spider-Man trilogy directed by Sam Raimi and with Tobey Maguire as the lead.
Nothing Compares to You - 1990
In 1990, Sinéad took home three MTV Music Video Awards, including Video of the Year, Best Female Video, and Best Postmodern Video for "Nothing Compares 2 U." Her signature defiance was in full play during the performance. She performed in a loose-fitting white maxi dress, teasingly revealing her black slip underneath. Well, if they wanted a skin show, she would do it on her own terms!
The singer completed the look with oval sunglasses and Doc Martens. Few artists have rocked the boat like Sinead O’Connor, who continually defied tropes of what artists “should” be. She can wear whatever she wants, and she will forever preserve her spot in the best artist of the 1990s list.
Greek Goddess - 2004
Angelina Jolie is one heck of an actress who may be mostly known for her role in "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" with Brad Pitt. In 2004, Jolie played the controversial role of Colin Farrell's mother in the movie "Alexander", which was all togas and draping fabrics. Obviously, it inspires her Academy Awards look that year.
Angelina looks like the queen of the carpet, and even without the neckless (that are stunning in our opinion), her dazzling looks would have done the dress justice. Even the tattoo on her upper gives a touch of rust to the over-cleaned look and shows Angelina in a sort of dimming light. We like!
Unbroken Hearts on the Red Carpet – 1997
American R&B singer Toni Braxton is one of the best-selling female artists in history, with tons of awards. For those who don't remember her (how could you?), she was responsible for the huge hit that got all tears flowing, "Unbreak my Heart." She’s also known for her ability to stun with her red-carpet looks, as she did back in the 1997 Grammys.
Here is Braxton wearing a sleek white gown showing her spectacular figure. Her short hair and subtle makeup go perfectly with the dress. With this look, Braxton proves that, if done right, a simple look goes a very long way. A classic dress for a classic woman.
Zara Royal - 2013
When it comes to setting a personal example, no one does it better than Katie. The Princess of Wales loves to shop from affordable shops such as Zara. In fact, she is a pretty big fan of clothing items and accessories from the Spanish brand. When you take a look at her outfits, you can tell that she was not lying about her love for the brand either.
When going to watch the premiere of "Mandela," the Princess (then Duchess) was seen wearing a necklace that she had gotten from Zara. Upon further inspection, it came to light that the necklace was $35 however looked amazing on her more expensive stunning gown.
Aniston Is American Royalty - 2020
Over the years, Jennifer Aniston has given us a wealth of iconic red-carpet moments. Now at over 50, Aniston looks as youthful as ever, and she dresses it, too! At the 2020 SAG awards, Aniston stunned in a white satin Dior gown with an asymmetrical neckline and mermaid-style bottom. Aniston needed to look the part as she took home the SAG award for Best Female Actor in a Drama.
Does someone plan on telling her she's already Hollywood royalty and she can calm down? Well, if they have, she's not listening, cause we know that if there were such a thing as an American Royal family, Rachel...sorry, we mean, Jennifer, would be Queen.
A British Beauty - 2006
This 2006 standout was worn by Keira Knightley at the 74th Golden Globes Awards. The Valentino gown is just as marvelous today as it was then. It is a wonder of simplicity, an all-white strapless column dress made of crepe satin. The decorative feature sets it apart — it is a floral bow design constructed with padded ribbon and decorated with crystals.
Without a doubt, Knightley’s pick is one of the chicest gowns ever worn at the Golden Globes, and she wears it to perfection. We know and love her for the remarkable roles she starred in Movieland, and here she proves that she doesn't have to say much, and she is still breathtaking. Just by standing there.
A Splash of Red - 2005
Karolina Kurkova showed up to the 2005 Gala in this long white gown, which included a large “I love you” message sewn across in bright red. Other images from the night reveal the dirty, wet steps outside of the museum, so who knows what the bottom of the dress looked like by the end of the evening! While she may have been trying to nod to the House of Chanel, which was being honored with that year’s theme, it was more of a swing and a miss than a home run.
No matter how stunning you are and how elegant you may think you can look, there are some things that are just not done, especially not on a red carpet. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is one of them.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - 2019
In recent years, Margot Robbie has truly embraced the feminine side of her style, and this is the perfect example of that. She donned this amazing Chanel Haute Couture gown for the premiere of "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," and she stole the show even more than she normally does when she walked the red carpet.
Floaty and flowy, this light gown was layered to add more texture to it, and the low neckline and cuffed sleeves made her look ethereal and even more stunning than usual. She embraced the title of "Once Upon a Time" and dressed in a suited gown for a fairytale princess.
A Royal Hachi Gown - 1985
For her appearance at the National Gallery in Washington D.C. in 1985, Princess Diana wore a unique piece by Hachi. The dress made by the Japanese designer featured white silk, a single shoulder, and silver beading detail. The dress was extra special because it was custom-made for Diana herself.
The elegant, single-shoulder dress became a signature style of Diana’s, and this particular Hachi design became part of an exhibition of the princess’s clothes. The late Lady Diana was seen throughout her life in a number of white dresses beside her wedding dress, however, this piece is one to remember, just like the princess herself. It was ultimately sold at an auction for $60,000.
White-and-Gold McQueen Gown - 2020
Considering the formal look of the gown, it comes as no surprise that Kate Middleton is often seen in it. Here, she donned a white-and-gold number for the 73rd annual BAFTAs in 2020. To celebrate the British Academy Film Awards, Kate swept her hair back into a classy updo. She also wore a necklace that seemed to match the pattern of her dress. She finished off the outfit with dangly earrings.
The princess has a huge influence on fashion trends and items that are sold in shops a day after she is seen in them get snatched in no time. For this gown, an increase in sales of all white and gold combinations was recorded.
Dazzling on the Riviera - 2019
White is always a risky color in the world of show business because you never know what drink is going to be spilled on you or what kind of appetizer could be dropped on your outfit (take it from us, stick to white wine.) However, that didn’t seem to faze Olivia Culpo when she made her way to the Cannes Film Festival in 2019.
This fashion mogul proved that her life in the fashion world has paid off, as this dress totally stole the red carpet. Not only was the dress absolutely stunning, but it was also easy to see that Olivia was feeling herself in it. Her makeup was light and flattering, and a beautiful neckless completed the look.
Sheer Confidence - 2011
It's no surprise seeing Rihanna pull off a see-through look, although this may be one of her most outrageous looks to date. While a lot of people might look tacky in this white, furry, off-the-shoulder number, Rihanna pulls it off unassumingly with strategic sewing and an impressive amount of confidence.
She rocked this dramatic sheer Jean Paul Gaultier Couture spring/summer 2011 dress to collect her award for Best Dance Recording at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards. When Rihanna finds a style she likes, she sticks to it, rather on a shorter cycle than the average person. And she has the means to afford her ever so changing style.
Jennifer Lawrence Goes Dior - 2014
This dreamy white gown by Dior has set off a meme frenzy, with people comparing it to the burlap-and-rope makeshift dress Ariel wraps herself in when she first gets her legs in "The Little Mermaid." While there is a great resemblance, the dress looks beautiful on the red carpet at the Golden Globes.
We would've maybe kept it with just one black belt (the one at the top), but hey, who are we to criticize Dior? Regardless, she looks beautiful. Jennifer Lawrence is best known for her role in "The Hunger Games," making her the highest-grossing action heroine of all time. She became an international star overnight and has only kept rising from there.
On Point - 2012
For the 2012 Met Ball, Melania Trump went for a different look as opposed to the usual long gown. This time, she chose a white cocktail dress designed by Marc Bouwer with pointed shoulders. Even before she became a First Lady, the Trump lady was famously known for always looking her best. You can't really expect anything else when you're talking about the former model.
After moving into The White House, the short tight dresses were traded in for long and classic gowns that read a little more presidential and a little less "I've been modeling since I was seventeen."
