The picture on the left was taken in 2003 at a military ball. The one on the right was taken in 2016 right before senior prom. The dashing dude must be super proud to be posing with both his wife and his daughter.
Even though the two pictures were taken more than a decade apart, the dress looks like a timeless classic. What a fantastic combination of a strappy top and sparkly blue!
Chic at the Prom
This teen decided to go for a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” look, donning a simple black strapless dress with an A-line skirt. The more conservative length is contrasted with the bare neckline. Heck, this looks like it could be on the red carpet at the Met Gala!
By removing the trim, stockings, and gloves (and perhaps the corsage), this teen has totally transformed her mom’s vintage dress. Love, love, love!
Black Never Goes Out of Style
We don’t need Anna Wintour to tell us that black is the most timeless choice for your garments, ever. This teen knows that very well and so did her mom! She tweaked the design here slightly, losing the cape-style shoulder covers on her mom’s dress.
But we kinda love the mermaid-style bottom. With her black choker, she’s looking very chic!
Like Sisters!
These two honestly are spitting images — like mirror images basically! The dress looks like it could’ve been sold today, when in fact it’s almost twenty years old! It might be the shoes and the hairstyle as well as the dangling earrings which make it look so similar.
It probably also helps that the teen on the right is her daughter... We’re a fan of the high neck and the silver detail against the black background.
Strike a Pose!
We kinda love it when teens not only wear the same dress their mom did, but they take the same photo as well! Sure, the perm didn’t quite make it into the photo, but the fabulous dress certainly did!
The neckline is elegant with a touch of risqué and we are so here for it! Gorgeous!
Class Class Class
Nothing really beats a strapless dress that hits just below the knee does it? This classic style, which is very 1950s Dior, seems to be fashionable regardless of the year that it appears in.
In a shade of turquoise, this teen decided to lose the long white gloves (which make it a bit more formal and a bit older), and opted for some cute gold strappy shoes! Love it!
Velvet and Lace!
We love some contrasting fabrics and textures, don’t you? This teen basically copied her mom’s look (she’s even got some pearls on) but it does look a lot more modern without those white gloves. Looking at some of the photos, it seems that the 80s and 90s really loved the gloves look.
We’re a fan of the deep burgundy velvet. The white lace is different, but it’s cute!
White…Wedding?
Okay okay, we know this isn’t a wedding photo, it’s a prom photo, but still…this fit does look like she’s about to walk down the aisle, right? The high neck, low back, and floor-length hemline certainly make it look formal. The up-do also looks bridal!
But hey, it was her mom’s prom dress and she wanted to wear it again. We’re a fan of recycling and going vintage, so who cares if it looks a bit bridal!
Cherry Red With Sparkles
We do love a good vintage moment, and this is certainly a great one! Sure, the daughter opted to not wear the wired pearls in her hair (okay, maybe they’re flowers, but we’ll go with pearls), but she looks so gorgeous in her mom’s vintage prom dress!
The dress hasn’t lost its vibrance and the sparkly buttons are the perfect little accent. Also, props to her date who wore a matching bowtie. Super cute!
Vintage Lace and a Pop of Blue
Well, we can definitely notice the difference in the years here — it’s that bright blue hair that is definitely not from the 90s (but then again, it wouldn’t surprise us, the 90s were aalllll about self-expression). But with her fair skin, the black dress is the perfect complement to her hair.
We actually really love this look — the dress is fitted without being too tight, and the lace pattern makes it super elegant. Lovely!
Cherry Red With Icing Sugar
Okay, we can’t help but liken this to a cherry with icing sugar sifted on top — the sheer overlay really kinda does look like it. It’s even a tad Christmasy, don’t you think? Anywho, thirty years later, this dress is still giving us heart-eyes!
Our favorite part about this photo comparison is the choice to do the same pose with her date.
Sure This Isn’t a New Dress?
Well, this dress certainly fooled us — it almost looks like it could have been made today! The elegant high neckline and cut-out arms with the fluid, drapey skirt are simply stunning! This young teen looks just as beautiful as her mom did almost thirty years prior!
This is probably one of our favorite looks and dresses. You go, girl! Also props for deciding to go vintage and pay tribute to your mom and her obviously great style!
Flashback With Sequins
Woah, look at those bright turquoise sequins! Definitely gives us mermaid vibes. The gorgeous bluey green is so beautiful, and this teen decided to match her eyeshadow to her dress, which makes her eyes pop!
It’s so cool to see these vintage dresses being given new life and new soul when they’re worn by the daughter of the original wearer! Totally love it.
This Dress Has Chanel vibes!
Honestly, no joke, this dress is reminiscent of a 90s Chanel dress that’s been all over the internet and back again! The simple black number with gold chain straps is super chic. It’s the perfect accent to a simple LBD.
With a simple hairdo and a cute corsage from her partner, this dress is a moment in itself! The cheeky slit as well makes it just that bit more va-va-voom. We are huge fans of this vintage prom dress moment!
Major Animal Print!
This dress, hands down, looks like it was made today. The straps across the midsection are honestly on so many dresses you see online today, it’s pretty shocking actually! The contrasting animal-print pattern in black and brown is so good on this teen’s skin tone — it’s almost made for her!
Again, this teen chose to modernize the dress by going without gloves. Now that we think about it, we’re kinda getting some vintage Raquel Welch vibes from this look. Slay!
Can’t Go Wrong With an LBD
Trying to find a way to spice up an LBD? Make it mini and add sequins! Oh wait, it looks like this mom was way ahead of her time — so much so that her daughter’s choice of wearing her prom dress makes it look as if she picked it off the rack today!
With some black platform pumps and long flowing locks, this teen looks absolutely gorgeous! We truly love these moments when something vintage is made modern and looks just as good as the day it was first worn!
Va-Va-Voom! Red at the Prom!
Red is certainly a statement color, and it looks good on basically everyone! This teen opted to wear her mom’s vintage prom dress to her own prom night, and she is absolutely crushing it!
She definitely understood the assignment, and her glasses and smile made her look even more like her mom! The sweetheart neckline and slit make it just a bit more special. We’re big fans!
Simply Gorgeous!
We are loving this sequin top and contrasting black satin skirt! It’s got an almost princess vibe to it, but it’s so chic! This teen modernized her mom’s dress by losing the gloves and going for a simple mani. It also lengthens anyone’s arm by going gloveless, but apparently, it was a big thing in the 80s and 90s.
And hey, we’re all about recycling and repurposing fashion — it doesn’t only save dollars, but it saves the planet even by a little bit. Imagine if all girls wore their mom’s dresses, they’d definitely reduce our carbon footprint.
Halloween, But Make It Prom
This vintage number certainly looks a lot more vintage than other dresses we’ve seen on here, but honestly, we are loving this green taffeta skirt that’s exploding out of the bottom of the black corset. It’s so cute!
This teen paid homage to her mom by also wearing gloves with the dress! Simple black pumps and a choker make it even more unique. This teen has certainly made the dress hers.
Corsets and Skirts
This trend of a corseted dress with an exploding skirt was definitely a vibe for the 80s and 90s! This teen decided she wanted to go a bit more princess and opted to wear her mom’s prom dress. The flattering corset pulls in her waist and adds a lot to her shape.
It’s flattering, sure, but also a great ode to her mom. We bet it made her mom a little teary to see her daughter wearing the same dress she wore to her own prom!
Spitting Image Prom Dress!
Looks like this photo was also taken in the same room — the same blue carpet, the same grandfather clock, the same dress…just a different girl! A tad younger and 50% her mom, this teen decided to go vintage and wear her mother’s prom dress — a purple number that had a sheer black overlay (which has been tweaked and removed).
The teen decided to keep the appliqué on the neckline and hip but thought it more modern to remove the twinkling black mesh on top.
Get That LBD Girl!
Every girl needs one, and if you don’t have one, you need to drop what you’re doing right now and go get one! We’re talking about a little black dress. This classic style just... well, won’t go out of style!
This mom from the 80s was looking extra spicy for her prom (the gloves actually look good here), and a similar look has been achieved by her teen daughter! We’re fans of this halter-neck black mini, and years later it still looks chic!
Frills on Frills on Frills
This peachy pastel pink is such a gorgeous shade! It’s reminiscent of spring blooms, and it’s perfectly fresh. This teen opted to sport the same look as her mother did at her own prom, except she lost some of the ruffles and added a red belt to her waist for a pop of color.
It looks like this teen also borrowed her mom’s pearls for her prom night. Also, funnily enough, don’t their dates look very similar?
Posing With Dad
The picture on the left was taken in 2003 at a military ball. The one on the right was taken in 2016 right before senior prom. The dashing dude must be super proud to be posing with both his wife and his daughter.
Even though the two pictures were taken more than a decade apart, the dress looks like a timeless classic. What a fantastic combination of a strappy top and sparkly blue!
Like Mother Like Daughter
After all, that’s what this whole article is about right? Moms who passed on their vintage prom dresses for their daughters to wear! This time we spy a slight alternation to the top of the dress.
The daughter decided to lop off the puffy sleeves and opted for a halter neckline with some white satin straps. Cute!
Back in Black
We love a good black dress, and this dress is another stunning example. This teen decided to repurpose her mom’s vintage prom dress, and wore it to her own big night!
The keyhole neckline is cheeky, and the beaded collar means you don’t have to wear any jewelry! Talk about efficient dressing. We’re big fans of this form-fitting, classic black dress.
Draped in Red
Look at that pose! The props are all there and the dress and bolero are one and the same. This teen decided to go back thirty years and steal her mom’s prom dress for her own prom night!
With a bold red lip and soft waves, this teen is looking super gorgeous! If the weather allows it, we’re sure that she’ll modernize her look a little more by taking off her bolero.
Turn Around in Purple!
This eggplant-colored cross-back dress is actually so stunning! The form-fitting design with a long skirt is accentuated by some cool cross-back detail. It looks just as good on her daughter as it did on the mom!
Truthfully speaking, this dress looks modern enough that it could’ve been picked off the rack or bought online today! Great dress.
Same Same, But Different
Wow, what a dress! We actually kinda dig this look — it’s romantic and flowy but also modern in a boho-chic way. The off-the-shoulder style (which is actually a more modern way of wearing the dress) is super cute, and totally transforms the dress and the wearer!
It’s a great color too — it’s almost like a plum burgundy, and complements this teen’s features super nicely! We love that she chose to wear her mom’s dress, especially when it looks this good.
Maybe It’s the Dress, Maybe It’s Her
This teen certainly wears her mom’s dress beautifully! The Slytherin-green number with the tasteful slit down the leg is really pretty. We’re a fan of the way this dress fits, complementing the figures of both the mother and daughter.
Wow, we sound like the fashion police. But it’s true! We’re so glad this teen decided to take a walk down memory lane with her mom and wear the same dress!
Black Is Always a Good Idea!
Yep, we’re fans of the LBD. You really can’t go wrong. Simple, classy, and sophisticated. This cross-over neck dress with beaded accents is a great one. Mother and daughter look just as gorgeous, and the dress fits so well!
We love that these teens are taking to wearing their mom’s prom dresses — way more sustainable than buying a new dress, huh?
Azure Blues and Sequins
This is a super cool dress! This blue sequin vintage number from the 80s is still a hard-hitter even a few years later. It’s chic and simple in design, with the focus point of the dress being those gorgeous blue sequins.
The side slit and spaghetti straps make it oh-so-chic, and we are totally living for this color! If this were our mom, we’d be wanting to wear that dress to our prom too!
Four Women, One Dress
This vintage dress was first worn in 1962 by a great-grandmother with an impeccable sense of taste. The three following generations of women who followed in this woman's footsteps got to enjoy this beautiful piece too!
The light pink satin and the bow on the back are the things princesses are made of, and the great-granddaughter pairing it with a bejeweled updo is the icing on this cake.
Mom’s Dress? More Like Mine!
Okay, these two honestly look so alike we’re finding it difficult to tell them apart! Maybe it’s the dress or the fact they’re mother and daughter...
The delicate lace and beadwork on the neckline are a soft and sultry way to draw the eyes up toward the face and are a nice contrast to the simple black sheath style. The slit is tasteful, and really makes the dress very fun!
Candy Red
We have to give props where props are due, and they are definitely due here. Not only has this dress remained in mint condition for 25 years (1990-2015), but it fits both of its wearers perfectly.
We also love the attention to detail demonstrated in the pendant and earrings. The mother opted for a pearly pendant and earring duo and the daughter went with an elaborate geometric pattern.
Re-Vamped Prom Dress!
Naw, we love these photos. We absolutely love the fact that the daughter chose to pose with her mom in the photo — it makes our hearts go “awwww.”
By shortening the long pale pink gown and trimming off the sleeves, this teen certainly modernized her mom’s dress. She’s made it her own, and her mum sure looks happy and proud of her baby girl!
Electric Blue
Talk about bringing back the 80s — the shocking electric blue peplum dress hasn’t changed one bit from the first time it was worn back some thirty years ago! The ruching and the peplum particularly with this fabric are certainly very vintage, but we love it!
Losing the gloves and stockings and wearing some simple black pumps definitely brings this dress into the modern age. We’re enjoying it, and this teen looks super happy with her choice to go vintage!
My Beautiful Mom
Nothing compares to the love of a mother, and what a beautiful mother she is. This mother tweeted "Hands down my baby wore it better than me." This kind of design will probably never go out of style.
A royal blue gown with lacy straps that give it a personal touch. That teenager must have been over the moon, knowing that no other girl would turn up in the same dress.
Polka Dot Prom
Not sure why the mother in the image looked so shocked. Maybe it's because she realized that one day, her 15-year-old daughter will be wearing her senior prom dress.
The peacock-style back of the dress, we prefer to ignore, but overall, it seems that the young lady did pretty good.
Marilyn Monroe
The mother on the right seems extra happy standing in front of the boys. She was in the mood for posing a "Diamond are a girl's best friend" style pose, honoring her idol, Marilyn Monroe.
Her daughter (on the left) had a bit of altering done, making it more 21st-century. She removed the straps, removed the flowers (don't blame her), and added a pearl necklace.
Snow White
Right, someone has to tell the teens of today that not all vintage prom dresses can be re-worn. Take this one for example. It resembles more of a show costume than a prom dress.
By the looks of it, the mother (on the left) has accepted this, but what about the young girl? Apparently not.
Have All Dry Cleaners Closed Down?
This one had great potential. A silky gown, greyish-purple, off the shoulders, and in the perfect length. We know the picture on the left looks like a marriage proposal, but trust us, it's prom night.
The next generation had one thing to take care of, but the kids of today are not the kids of yesterday. If only she would have taken it to the dry cleaners to get it straightened. And no. Excuses of "it's been tucked away for 20 years" are unacceptable. Next.
Lady in Red
Quite stunning these two are, and for a moment there, we could have sworn they were two best friends who dressed the same for the prom night.
In fact, these are mother and daughter, wearing the mother's prom dress (and jewelry). Astonishing.
When You Have It All, You Have It All!
This teenager, getting ready to go to her prom has definitely left her mother in the dust. That dress was first worn 20 years too early.
A classic contrast of black and white. Never outdated, always stands out. A beautiful gown on a beautiful lady.
So So Bad
This time, it's not us. This teenager has posted the next lines on her Instagram account. "So today my mom found her prom dress from 1994 and of course I just had to put it on because it was just so bad and then decided to recreate her senior pictures so here they are haha."
Thankfully this girl was wise enough to realize, that if she was going to recreate her mother's photos, a splash of humor would have to be added.
Bottle Green and a Beautiful Grin
This could be a shot out of the movie "Back to the Future." This woman and her daughter are absolutely a spitting image of one another. So, in 1995 the mother wore her bright green dress, which was simple and classy.
Transfer into the future. It's now twenty years later, and the young lady meets the younger version of herself, which is actually her daughter who looks just as striking (if not more) than her mother did all those years back.
Anything Works These Days
We are sure this florally-designed dress was a huge hit back in the 1970s. And the hairstyle this woman (left) has, blends in perfectly with the era. Now, on the one hand, the dress on the daughter looks great.
The tall neckline is very flattering and it falls down on her body smoothly. On the other hand, the slight tablecloth resemblance is something we cannot ignore.
The 80s Are Back!
The 1980s are known for their outrageous sense of fashion. Balloon skirts and padded shoulders are only some of the iconic dress codes that ruled the streets at the time.
This gorgeous young woman can get away with almost anything. Even with the 1980 extra-large papillon knot and layers of tulle puffing up the skirt part.
Powder Pink Princess
For her prom, this teenager chose to go with some very time-specific elements. The time we are referring to is most probably the '80s (judging by the picture of the original wearer) and the elements are obviously the big bows on the arms, the lacey bodice, and the ruching at the bottom of the skirt part.
Perhaps her prom was time travel-themed and thanks to her mother she already had the perfect outfit to fit the bill. She seems incredibly happy and excited to be posing with her father and he seems equally excited to see his little baby all grown up.
It All Runs in the Family
You wouldn't believe this gorgeous dress existed almost 30 years ago. A long straight cut that will flatter any (slim) woman.
The floral pattern only upgrades the gown, turning it into a unique piece. This one is definitely for keeping to hand down for the next generations to follow.
Passed Down in Pink
This is a seriously sweet "Sisterhood of the Travelling Dress" movie waiting to be made! Not only did one sister decide to don her mom's pastel pink gown, but it seems that her sisters followed suit (or dress, in this case).
We're sure that this mom is beaming with pride knowing that her fashion sense impressed ALL of her daughters. No easy feat!
Gold Trim Is Always in
Very few people can pull off a white satin dress with ornate gold trim, a thigh-high slit, and a garter to top it off. However, it turns out that this mom AND her daughter both pulled the look off perfectly!
Sure, the daughter may have made a few adjustments (getting rid of the garter was a wise choice in our opinion) but the two look almost identical in the frock. Golden genes must run in the family.
Blue & Bling
Ah, who doesn't love the pure fun and extravagance of the 80s? Electric blue satin? Check. Sparkling sequins? Check. A big bustle bow bottom?
We LOVE the daughter's homage to her mother's glamourous gloves by opting for matching nail polish instead. We just hope that she followed in her mother's footsteps and took a human to prom and not a tree trunk...
An Understated Classic
It's a universal fashion fact that everyone ought to have an LBD (little/long black dress) in their closet that fits every occasion. Luckily for this high schooler, her mom had that exact perfect prom LBD ready to be re-worn.
What's particularly great about this dress's simple style and classic cut is that it will be a re-wearable prom dress for generations to come!
Red Redemption
There's no question that this sequined red prom dress would turn heads whether it was worn in 1993 or 2019.
While the hairstyle and accessories may have changed over the years, we think that this mom and her daughter look so alike in this spectacular sequined gown. Shine ladies, shine!
Black and White Ballgown
Pair a black velvet laced bodice with a massive white tulle skirt and you've got yourself an iconic prom look. This dress was so memorable that over 27 years after its first debut, this youngster was inspired to give it a twirl.
We have to say we LOVE that she even paired the dress with her mom's accessories. Check out the original long black gloves and velvet choker and try to spot the very few differences!
Green Queen
We have to admit, we wouldn't have thought that a dress in this style and fabric would be wearable by a teen nowadays. However, this daughter managed to not only pull off her mom's "dated" prom look but also breathed new life into the garment.
She looks so glamorous and she didn't have to spend a dime which means we're pretty sure that fellow prom-goers were... green... with envy.
Notable Neckline
While some prefer to go for a simple and chic prom look, this mother-daughter duo chose to be bold and wear this velvet dress complete with an incredibly intricate and statement-making neckpiece.
It takes a daring dress like this to make such an impact, even decades apart. Hats off to them!
Seeing Red
While trendy dresses may be appealing, the big benefit of picking a classic prom dress style is that your daughter will likely wear it some years later. That's just what happened here.
Actress Lela Rochon, of "Waiting to Exhale" fame, lent her daughter this evergreen (well in this case ever-red) gown that looked just as stunning back in the day as it does now!
Department Store Dream Dress
Whoever said you can't find your perfect prom dress from a department store should take a look at this mother-daughter dream team!
This Crowley's galaxy-inspired frock has certainly stood the test of time (and space). It goes to show that you don't need to drop all your dollars to wear your ideal dress.
Patterned Prom
Sure, this statement 80s dress would not be everyone's prom pick, but we think it's particularly precious that this daughter is following in her mom's bold footsteps.
Plus we LOVE the addition of the safety-pinned picture of the original outfit. Who doesn't love a good reference photo?
Sequin Chic
We would never have thought that a dress covered head to toe in shiny cyan sequins would triumph over trends and still be fashionable a generation later!
Well, this mother-daughter duo proved us wrong! They both rock the frock even decades apart. We also LOVE that this daughter decided to pay hair homage to her mom's curly updo.
It's All in the Face
On the right, we have the Redditor who posted this picture and on the left we have her mother wearing the same Little Bo Peep-inspired prom gown. Now, the only thing that we're perplexed by is the look on the daughter's face. You see, the look on her face and her overall appearance tell different stories.
While the dress, jewelry, gloves, and hairdo look like they were put together by someone who is happy to wear them, the girl's single raised eyebrow and overall 'are you kidding me' expression both tell us that she may have been forced into the frame.
So Versatile
We really have to commend this mother's fashion sense. Not only did she pick out a prom dress that could fit any time (as demonstrated by her daughter who wore it 20 years later) but she chose one that could be styled in endless different ways.
To the left, we have the red-headed mother at 14 years old going to prom, and to the right we have her daughter, at 16 years old, going to a Titanic-themed event styled to the nines with a nifty headband. She looks like an elegant, distinguished young woman. No doubt this dress should survive any unplanned icebergs.
20 Years Apart
The picture on the left was taken in the year 2003 and the picture on the right was taken in 2023, and we all know what that means, right? It means that people who were born in the early 2000s have kids who are now old enough to be attending proms. Let that sink in for a minute.
Good. Now that you've wrapped her head around this issue you can take a couple of moments to appreciate the beautiful gown featured in both images. We loved the midnight blue, the Asian-inspired structure, and of course, the ornate embroidery along the side.
A Third Generation
While most entries in this article feature mother-daughter duos, this one features the slightly rarer combination of a grandmother and a granddaughter wearing her homecoming gown 60 years later. Wow, it seems like the craftsmanship back in the day was truly notable if the dress had survived for so long and stayed in such mint condition.
We especially love that the grandmother's look is completed with a huge bouquet of flowers and a big, fabulous crown. It is an outfit indeed fit for a princess. No doubt that the granddaughter will find her own way of adding a princess-like touch to her overall look too.
Always in Fashion
There are a few things you can never go wrong with. One of them is opting for black (unless you're a bride on your wedding day of course, though we have seen women who were able to make it work) and another one is going with a minimal design. The mother and daughter in these two pictures tick off both boxes with their sleek and sporty prom dress.
The color is timeless as well as are the delicate white accents. We also appreciate the men's fashion here. The mother's date was in a formal distinguished uniform that would compliment any girl on his arm, and the daughter's date matched her with a black and white ensemble.
Is This a Time Loop?
And now, we have the same dress, only 26 years apart. The gown was first worn in 1991 and then worn again in 2017. If the dress could talk it would probably say it is having the most major deja vu.
During both times this dress has seen daylight, it was donned by two women who look almost exactly the same, paired with a couple of black opera gloves, and styled with an impressive blonde updo. Add that to how both pictures were taken at the same park bench by the same lake and the dress is probably under the impression it is living in a time loop.
