The award-winning English actor Christian Bale has proven himself over the years to be one of Hollywood’s most extreme method actors. He is known for having an extreme body-change regime for every role he takes. Films like “The Machinist” and “The Fighter” come to mind.
His role as former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, in the film “Vice,” included Bale making his biggest weight change yet. Apparently, he ate a lot of pies to help put on 40 kg to reach the 100 kg mark. “It was more fun gaining the weight than losing it,” he said at the world premiere.
Kristen Stewart Put Her Own Spin on Diana for "Spencer"
There is no denying that Kristen Stewart looked the part when playing Princess Diana in the biopic movie "Spencer." But many have pointed out that Elizabeth Debicki looked a lot more like the late ex-wife of King Charles in the Netflix series "The Crown." The reason for this though had more to with the natural likeness before any makeup or costumes were added.
According to costume designer Jacqueline Durran, the aim in "Spencer" was to never make Stewart look identical to Diana, but to capture the essence of the character. "If you want an exact representation, what [The Crown]," Durran said. "But if you want an artistic interpretation of an idea, then watch Kristen."
Joaquin Phoenix Went Skeletal for "Joker"
No one was surprised when Joaquin Phoenix won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as the Joker. For the 2019 Todd Phillips movie, Phoenix did what he does best, fully immersing himself in the role. But from a physical standpoint, Phoenix went to extreme measures, losing 52 pounds to make himself look gangly and skeletal.
In his words, he wanted to look "wolf-like and malnourished and hungry." His costumes were designed to look "aged, overdyed, and distressed." The designers also made sure to make the iconic Joker suit unique from previous iterations, making it orange, red, and green.
Nicole Kidman Completely Changed Her Nose for "The Hours"
It's miraculous the difference a prosthetic nose can make. When actress Nicole Kidman donned the famous Virginia Woolf snout in the film "The Hours," she was instantly transformed into the famous writer. There was also quite a bit of makeup and the perfect wardrobe. Kidman is totally blonde and has a very different-looking nose, as we all know.
The brilliant actress more or less maintains the same look throughout her movies, though this one was a real step in another direction. Truth be told, she has never had a more radical transformation for a role in her entire career.
Tom Hardy Had the Best Makeup Team for "Capone"
When you are playing one of the most notorious gangsters in recent history, a full transformation is necessary. This is what Tom Hardy did when he played the titular character in the movie "Capone." Hardy is another fine example of an actor who will radically change his appearance for a role.
But it was makeup artist Audrey Doyle who really brought the character to life. Through her hard work, she was able to give Hardy a receding hairline, and facial scars, and even make his eyes look bloodshot. While the movie didn't do so well critically, Hardy steals the show as usual.
