Up until this very day, Chris Messina is still probably best known for his supporting role on the hit sitcom “The Mindy Project.” But Messina was almost unrecognizable when he showed up in the movie “Live by Night,” in which he stars alongside Ben Affleck, of all people.
In an interview with Stephen Colbert on “The Late Show,” Messina revealed just how far he went to transform into his role. “I put on 40 pounds,” he said. “It was fun, it was a lot of fun.” Because, at the end of the day, how can eating as much as you want for a few weeks not be fun?
Steve Carell Had Tons of Prosthetics for "Foxcatcher"
While it didn't win any Academy Awards, the critically acclaimed "Foxcatcher" was nominated for five of them at the 87th edition. Not only was Steve Carell nominated for Best Actor for his role as John du Pont. Bill Corso and Dennis Liddiard were also nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, mainly because of the work they had done to bring Carell's eery character to life.
"I used a prosthetic that covered his eyebrows," Corso said. "Then I put pale, thin eyebrows on him." Lip and nose prosthetics were also applied. As you can see, the end results were pretty stunning.
Jared Leto Relied on Prosthetics for "House of Gucci"
Jared Leto is renowned for undergoing radical physical transformations for his role. And he did the same for his role as Paolo Gucci. While prosthetics certainly went a long way to completing Leto's transformation, he still worked hard to make the role his own.
Leto spent a fair amount of time in Italy to get into the role and worked hard to perfect his Italian accent. Leto commented on how the portrayal took a heavy toll. “I did it all," he said."I was snorting lines of arrabbiata sauce by the middle of this movie. I had olive oil for blood. This was a deep dive I did."
Donnie Wahlberg Went Super Skinny for "The Sixth Sense"
He might not have stolen the headlines quite like Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment did, but respect must definitely be paid to Donnie Wahlberg for his contribution to "The Sixth Sense." Ultimately playing the guy who kills Willis's character (spoiler alert!), Wahlberg fully committed to the role, losing a whopping 43 pounds to better portray a disturbed man.
"At that time, I did exactly what I needed to do for the role," Donnie said. "I had to look like I was going through hell. I went to a really dark place." Apparently, Wahlberg cried when he read the script for the first time.
Gary Oldman Smoked So Many Cigars for "Darkest Hour"
Honestly, in his portrayal of Sir Winston Churchill, Oldman really is unrecognizable. He almost disappears into his character and into his role (and this portrayal is not the only role where he’s done this thing. Just watch “Hannibal”). He, like others on this list, uses a “pain bag,” which includes images that bring out emotions in Oldman.
Geez, that’s kinda sad. But we guess it’s his job to bring characters, and their pain, to life. But for his role in “Darkest Hour,” he spent more than 200 hours having makeup applied to him. And he smoked almost $30,000 worth of cigars. Subsequently, the actor developed some stomach issues.
