By now, Polly was pregnant again. She found herself in the East Bay of California, with a toddler in her hand and carrying an unborn child. The only savior she could think of was her own mother, and she called her, pleading for her to take her back home.
Her mother took her in and did whatever she could (which wasn’t much) for her poor Polly. The days passed and baby Gordon Michael came into the world. Life was bout to turn upside down.
As Poor as Could be
They lived in an old cabin as that's all they could afford. Snakes and other reptiles were regular visitors and it was far from being a safe and secure place to bring up a baby.
Polly found herself with a newborn and a useless husband. She knew she had to change the way she was living as this way of life couldn't go on for much longer. She found it impossible to take care of her baby all alone.
They Had Nothing
The little money they did have wasn't going to the right places. Polly's husband, sailor Wiley Albert, was giving every penny he made to his mother, and left his wife and child with nothing. How long could this go on?
The reality was rough. She sometimes used to steal fruit and vegetables from the nearby grocery store as there was barely any money for food. She woke up one day and decided that enough was enough. It was time for a change.
She Had No Choice
When Gordon was two years old, he was diagnosed with a severe medical condition. His internal organs weren't functioning properly, which put him in a life-threatening situation. Polly was heartbroken. She knew she could never afford medical treatment and she was about to make a decision that would have an impact on her entire life.
She had to prioritize Gordon's well-being. He needed a better life with better people to take care of him and so she put him up for adoption. Her world collapsed and there was no going back.
This Was Not What She Planned
Gordon was adopted by a family that would turn out to be not as loving and caring as Polly wished for. Over the years she had often wondered what ever happened to her little baby boy and never in a million years could she have dreamed of actuality being reunited with him.
At one point in life, Mick stopped thinking about his biological family and he too never thought they would one day meet. He gave up on happily-ever-after stories a long time ago.
