It seems like lifetimes ago when a 28 year old John Legend and 20 year old Chrissy Teigen first met while shooting a music video. The year was 2006, and Teigen was on the set of Legend’s music video, “Stereo,” playing his love interest. Teigen walked into the dressing room to meet Legend, only to find him ironing his underwear.
“You do your own ironing?” she asked, to which Legend replied, “Of course I do.” Something about that moment stuck. The two did the music video together. The shoot was over, but they never ended up saying goodbye that night.
The Period In-Between
Things slowed down after their first rendezvous as John Legend went out on tour shortly after. Truth be told, the pair were not officially dating. Legend even made a couple of red-carpet appearances with other women. We're sure Chrissy wasn't so happy about that.
Teigen later told Cosmopolitan that she played it cool for a long time. She never wanted a label in the first place and Marriage wasn’t even on her mind. She had never been traditional. So, she gave him the space to be for a while. It didn’t matter what they were. She was just happy to have met him.
Of Long-Distance, Texting, and Everything in Between
We know what was on Chrissy Teigen’s mind during this time, but what was on John Legend's? He was on the road, but his mind and heart were certainly elsewhere. The two were not meeting as often. But they were texting a lot and talking on the phone for hours.
These were all sure-shot signs that the two were madly in love. Legend loved how interesting she was. Her wit and humor simply blew him away. He has said that he fell more and more in love with Teigen in this in-between period. And truth be told, it was only just beginning.
Connection Despite Distance and a Series of Epiphanies
Despite a busy touring schedule, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend began spending a lot more quality time together. Their connection only grew stronger as time went on. Between tour stops, texts, and stolen moments – the two realized this was the real deal and didn't want to pass up this unique opportunity.
Legend later told ET that he was not nervous about it. Far from it. He was excited at the thought of how great this could be. So really, it was the best kind of jitters. The kind you get when you know your life’s about to change for the better.
They Broke Up for a Day
Like many romances do, this one suffered a brief glitch. John Legend apparently tried to break up with Chrissy Teigen when she joined him on tour. The singer fell sick, and the stress started getting to him. He said he couldn’t be in a relationship.
The perceptive Teigen knew that his feelings came from a wholly different space – the illness, having to cancel a show. It wasn’t because they weren’t working as a couple. Years later, Teigen would joke about it and tell him, “Remember when you tried to break up with me?” A sheepish Legend replied, “Yes, sorry. Big mistake.”
