There is no denying that Mother’s Day celebrations took on new meaning for the family the following year. The day was bittersweet, but John Legend was not one for wallowing. He celebrated his wife via a heartfelt Instagram post in May 2021. And the post touched the hearts of many followers all around the world.
Legend wrote it was a tough year for them but that they are now wiser and happier. He called her his inspiration and best friend. Fans adored the couple for their vulnerability – for sharing their best moments and the not-so-perfect ones. And as you can see, the entire family is stronger because of it.
The Heartbreaking Story Unfolds
As a practice, the couple had never named their babies beforehand. Their other children, Luna and Miles, got their names at the last possible moment — right before leaving the hospital. But for some reason, Teigen and Legend had already begun calling their unborn son Jack. After all, Jack Legend did have a nice ring to it.
He would always be their Jack. A devastated Teigen wrote, "To our Jack — I'm so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn't give you the home you needed to survive. We will always love you." And Jack would always have a big place in their hearts.
Another Year Wiser and Smarter
There are no limits to a John Legend birthday celebration – especially when Chrissy Teigen is at the helm of things. She celebrated her husband’s 42nd birthday in December 2020 with a Math-Off! Many couples might shudder at the thought of celebrating a birth with mathematics, but not this couple!
Legend squared off against Mike Rosenthal, their photographer, and director. Teigen played game-show host to the tee, wearing a sparkling gown and holding a microphone. She announced that John and Mike love doing math, so she created the ultimate contest in sixth-grade math. The birthday boy was victorious and said he hoped to get in bed with the host that night.
The Cycle of Loss and Struggles With Sobriety
The couple shared how they struggled to cope after losing their baby. Consequently, Chrissy Teigen confessed that she had turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism. In August 2021, she published a post on Instagram explaining her struggle with sobriety after losing Jack, admitting she always had a drinking problem.
But this just exacerbated things. Three months after losing Jack, Teigen announced that she had been sober for four weeks. She was tired of feeling unwell because of it. Mostly, she was embarrassed by her drinking habits. However, the new commitment to sobriety made it even tougher to come to terms with the pain.
Getting Through Pain Together
In a heartfelt gesture of support for his wife, John Legend decided to cut back on the drinking of alcohol too. The couple shifted their focus to self-care instead of numbing the pain with drinks. The duo created a nightly routine that helped them stay centered together. And proved to have lasting benefits.
Legend even collaborated with "Headspace," a wellness app, to create content around rest and rejuvenation. He said that everything started with a good night’s sleep. While the singer’s schedule can get hectic, he shared that he tries to keep the nightly routine with his wife. And they still maintain it until this very day.
