In the meantime, Russell’s career was on a standstill. He held minor roles in TV shows and films until landing the leading role in the TV movie, Elvis. The movie earned him an Emmy nomination. His recognition continued to grow when he played Snake Plissken in a dystopian action movie, Escape from New York and the sequel Escape from Los Angeles.
Russell would once again unite with Escape director John Carpenter to work on the horror movie The Thing.
The Power Couple
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been in a romantic partnership for 35 years. While they never felt the need to make their relationship official by getting married, many people were shocked to hear of their recent announcement to get married.
This latest development has changed everything regarding their time together and their identities in Hollywood.
Trying Times
Goldie Hawn isn't shy to discuss the difficulties involved in making a relationship last. During an interview she gave with People Magazine the actress shared, “Monogamy is a very tough order. You’re in the prime of your life, you are attracted to other people, potentially, you have fantasies about that.”
Despite these difficulties, the couple has managed to overcome these desires and have not allowed the media to tear their relationship apart.
How It All Began
Goldie and Kurt first met on the set of The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band in 1968. At this point, the two were far from becoming each others one and only. In fact, they didn't at all have a love at first sight experience. When they met, they were both at the start of their careers.
This was actually the first feature film that Hawn appeared in, that is how early on she was in her career. Russell on the other hand, had only three film credits in his resume at this point.
Age Mattered
Unlike many other celebrities who often ignore age differences completely, Goldie and Kurt didn't even think of one another in the romantic sense because of the difference in their age. While they had a nice time together and respected one another, a future together didn't cross either of their minds (although we are sure that Russell was smitten by the older and svelte actress. During an interview with BBC, Goldie recalled, "I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young."
At the time that they met, Goldie had just reached the legal drinking age at 21 and Russell was still a minor at 16. While a five-year age difference doesn't make such a big difference as older adults, when you're still young, it can seem like a lot.
Road to Stardom
After the two actors had finished filming the movie together, Goldie and Kurt each went their separate ways. One year later in 1969, Goldie won an Academy award for Supporting Actress for Cactus Flower as well as a Golden Globe Award.
Her career took off; she was gaining fans all over the world and was at the height of her career. She was nominated for another Academy award for her performance in Private Benjamin.
A Honky Tonk Woman
Goldie was an unstoppable force in the 70's. She hosted two television specials: Pure Goldie (1971) and The Goldie Hawn Special (1978). The latter was made her comeback, after she had been out of the spotlight for two years since 1976, when she played in The Dutchess and the Dirtwater Fox. During her two-year hiatus, she focused on her marriage and on the birth of her son. It seemed like everybody wanted to work with the star.
In 1972, Hawn released a solo country album for Warner Brothers. Her album Goldie was produced with the help of country sensation Dolly Parton and Buck Owens. The album, in which she covered Bob Dylan's song, received favorable reviews.
The Action Hero
In the meantime, Russell's career was on a standstill.
Last Written Words
Apparently, Walt Disney's last written words were "Kurt Russell," shortly before his death in 1966. This mystery still hasn't been made sense of. Kurt was a child actor for Walt Disney Studios before attaining world-wide fame.
He was also on 10-year contract with the studio to work in their films and was the studio's biggest star in the 1970s. Did Disney write this message in prediction that Kurt Russell was soon to become a huge star?
Decisions, Decisions
Kurt Russell had to choose between two things he loved – would he chase a career as an actor or become a professional baseball player? He joined the minor leagues after being inspired by his father who was also a professional baseball player.
He made it to class AA in the California Angels in 1973, where he played second base. He had a pretty good average of .563 which got him to the league but he decided to pursue an acting career instead.
Two Separate Lives
Similar to their differing professional lives, their personal lives were also developing in contrast to one another. Goldie married dancer Gus Trikonis in 1969 in Hawaii. The pair were together for seven years.
Shortly after the divorce, Hawn married musician Bill Hudson of the Hudson Brothers and they had two children together – Oliver and Kate. Russell, meanwhile, tied the knot with Season Hubley with whom he starred in Elvis and had a son with her named Boston.
Matrimony No More
Kurt and Hubley's marriage lasted for four years. They divorced in 1983. Hawn, meanwhile, divorced Hudson in 1980. She and Bill had met while she was still married to Trikonis.
Both Hawn and Russell's marriages failed around the same time and they were both conveniently single again during the same years. However, the two would never have expected that they would end up together.
Hawn`s Steamy Moments With Warren Beatty and Mel Gibson
On Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Hawn shared some steamy moments with her male co-stars, and one was with the strikingly handsome Warren Beatty. The stunning star was actually quite nervous about meeting Beatty, saying, “He was so handsome that I didn’t know if my eyes would burn inside my head if I looked at him long enough.” Hawn and Beatty met each other on the set of the 1971 movie Dollars, which was filmed in Germany.
Andy Cohen asked if Goldie had feared falling under Beatty’s spell. Hawn admitted “I kind of did. Yeah. I really did. I mean, honestly, and you know, uh, and I did.” Hawn said that she and Beatty had a moment, but she wouldn’t share more than that— although she did say that she met his mom and dad. What really happened between the two will stay a mystery, but Hawn was glad to tell us about another handsome actor when she was asked to choose her favorite onscreen kisser. She admitted to it being Mel Gibson, from Bird on Wire.
We Meet Again
Finally in 1983, Goldie and Kurt's story recommenced. They once again met at an audition for Swing Shift. Russell was infatuated with Goldie years after they first worked together. However, Kurt had gone a little hard with the alcohol the night before and was experiencing a terribly bad hangover, a recipe which doesn't produce the best outcome.
He found himself unable to express his feelings for Goldie. Russell admitted to Conan when he was a guest on the show that he approached Goldie saying "Man, you've got a great figure." Well, we do have to agree with him on that.
The Unfortunate First Move
"I was severely hungover...and I didn't know Goldie at all outside of having worked with her many years before," Kurt Russell shared with Conan O'Brien when discussing how he started up a conversation with his now-longtime partner.
"I just didn't know in my mind what I was going to say." Then, he thought in his drunken stupor, that it would be a good time to compliment her on her body.
A First Date To Remember
Against all odds and Russell's horrible hangover, his compliment worked in his favor. Kurt scored a date with the blonde stunner. On their first date, they went to see a movie. From there, things started to heat up and the two continued their date to a club for some swing dancing.
The night was quite memorable and even involved the police... usually not the type of date which leads to everlasting love. After the two clubbed until the wee hours of the morning, they went back to Hawn's home. Since she had just purchased the home to start renovations on, she didn't have a key yet. The two broke into her own home and that's when the police showed up, thinking that there had been a break in and suspected robbery. The two didn't let the hindrance ruin their first date and they continued on to a hotel room. That sure as hell beats any first date we've ever heard of.
Recalling the First Date
"That was our first date," Russell remembers. "It was a lot of fun, I'll tell you what. I can't believe it was a long time ago." When things are that great, they sometimes feel like they happened just yesterday.
But, their Valentine's date was a whopping 35 years ago. It's adorable to see Russell recall their slightly bizarre and scandalous first date with such fondness.
Trying Times
If you ask Goldie Hawn how to maintain a long relationship, she won't beat around the bush with you. She'll tell you like it is. As she once told People Magazine, "monogamy is a very tough order. You're in the prime of your life, you are attracted to other people, potentially, you have fantasies about that."
Despite this ballsy admittance of hers, the power couple have managed to surpass any outside desires and they stay loyal to one another, something that is quite rare in Hollywood.
The New Brady Bunch
Despite getting together at a fairly older age, the two had every intention of growing their family. Goldie already had two children prior to Russell with Bill Hudson and Russell had one child with Season Hubley.
Goldie became pregnant three years into her relationship with Kurt and gave birth to their first child on July 10, 1986, Wyatt Russell. There is an evident bond between the family despite some of their kids being born in previous marriages. The children all share their love of acting and each one takes on his or her own unique projects.
Kate Hudson's Fame
Goldie and her daughter Kate Hudson are super close. Not only do the two share a lot in common in terms of their stunning looks and physique, but they are also both big Hollywood stars. Goldie is very proud of her daughter.
Kate has starred in several blockbuster films, like How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, Raising Helen, and My Best Friends' Girl. Besides her acting endeavors, she also co-founded a fitness brand and program called Fabletics. On top of this, as if she has had the time for anything more, she has been busy in the last few years releasing two books; her first one in 2016 called Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body, and in 2017, she released her second book, Pretty Fun: Creating and Celebrating a Lifetime of Tradition.
Almost Famous
It isn't easy to grow up in the shadow of two major movie legends and Kate was definitely no stranger to this. She decided that it was critical for her career to distance herself from her parents and build her own career.
The first major role she landed was as Penny Lane in Almost Famous, directed by Cameron Crowe. Her performance scored her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Kate And Kurt Russell
Remarrying when you already have kids can be messy if your children don't want to welcome a new father figure into their lives. Lucky for both Kurt and Kate, things turned out exceptionally well between the two and Kate even thinks of Kurt as her real father. Kate has never had hard feelings towards her real father, Bill, but she does feel a stronger connection to Kurt who has been raising her since she was 18 months old.
Kate has commented that her biological father has no idea where she is or what she's doing. Kate has shared about Kurt that he has helped her a lot with her career over the years: "He is so honest, so brutally honest. I love him so much; he is just a great guy. He is an original. He doesn't buy into things." In fact, the two shared the big screen together when they acted in the 2016 drama Deepwater Horizon.
Kate And Oliver's Relationship With Their Father
Goldie and Bill Hudson had a second child together, Oliver. Kate and Oliver have both commented on the effort they have each made to get in touch with their biological father, but Bill has not replied. The two siblings clearly learned their family values from Goldie and thanks to Goldie, they have a very close relationship.
As for the lack of connection to their biological father, they fortunately have a father figure in Kurt who immediately stepped in to completely fulfill the role.
The Absent Father Speaks
In 2015, Oliver shared a very honest Father's Day picture on Instagram with the caption "Happy abandonment day" clearly meant for their biological father, Bill. Bill Hudson shared his version of the story with The Daily Mail. He claims that Goldie turned his children against him. While he made attempts at staying close with Kate and Oliver following the divorce, Goldie kept the kids away from him, instead, wanting to grow the bond between them and Kurt.
After Oliver shared this last post, he decided that he no longer wanted any contact with his children. He shared with the Daily Mail "I say to them now, ‘I set you free.' I had five birth children and I now consider myself a father of three. I no longer recognize Oliver and Kate as my own... [Oliver] is dead to me now. As is Kate."
Hudson Kids Loved Kurt From Day 1
From the moment Kurt became a part of the Hudson's lives, the bond was just natural between them. They loved him since the moment they met him.
In an interview with People, Goldie shared "What really got me was when I watched my kids when they'd come to the set and how he was with them. He was amazing with them. He was such a natural."
Kate And Goldie's Relationship
Goldie and Kate have always had a very close relationship, despite all of the barriers that mothers and daughters may face. Kate owes a lot of her success to Goldie, who set a perfect example to her while growing up and continues to serve as an inspirational figure for her.
She credits Goldie with instilling good values in her and says she wouldn't be where she is today without an amazing mother like her. The two of them are very supportive of one another and are often seen in public together enjoying each other's company.
What about Wyatt
Much like the rest of his acting family, Wyatt is following suit. Prior to dabbling in acting, Wyatt was a professional hockey player. He left the sport after battling a series of injuring. Having an athletic career under his belt helped him in the film Everybody Wants Some! when he played a partying athlete. Wyatt has acted in other films like 22 Jump Street, This is 40, and Love and Honor.
In 2016, Wyatt began a relationship with Meredith Hagner, a fellow actor whom he met on the set of Folk Hero and Funny Guy. The two recently became engaged. Wyatt has shared that his parents gave him one piece of advice: "Be on time, know your lines, and be a nice guy."
Granny Goldie
Time sure goes fast and Goldie and Kurt's children are now all adults. However, that means that there are now many grandchildren to rejoice in. Kate has three children of her own, a son, Ryder, with her ex-husband Chris Robinson, her second child, Bingham, with Matt Bellamy, and recently, the 39-year-old actress gave birth to a baby girl, Rani Rose, with her now boyfriend Danny Fujikawa.
Her brother, Oliver, has three children with his wife, Erin Bartlett. So grandpa Kurt and grandma Goldie still get to enjoy having babies and young children around when they all come visit.
Raising Families
Goldie raised her children as Jewish, but more so, on Buddhism and meditation. Kate has shared that meditation has had a huge positive impact on her life. In 2016, she commented "Meditation has been the most helpful and life-changing thing for me. You can feel the difference when you meditate on a regular basis."
She does an hour of meditation every day, in the morning for 30 minutes and in the afternoon, for 30 minutes. Her brother, Oliver, is also into Buddhism and his marriage to his wife Erinn was officiated by a Buddhist monk.
Working Together
When Goldie and Kurt got back together to shoot Swing Shift, the two were faced with a challenge. They had amazing chemistry both on-screen and off. Swing Shift was not a blockbuster success and didn't earn back the amount spent on production.
However, their next film together in 1987, Overboard, was a hit. It made $27 million at the box office. That was the last movie they would be in together for the next 31 years.
A Reunion At Last
In 2018, everybody's favorite Hollywood couple were finally reunited on the big screen. While the two have been dating since 1983, they haven't appeared in a film together since they starred in Overboard together in 1987. In the 2018 Netflix film, "The Christmas Chronicles" Kurt stars as Mr. Santa Claus, and Goldie, his wife, Mrs. Santa Claus. Unfortunately, Goldie is only featured in the film in the way end and only for a short snippet. However, to play in a Christmas movie together was very special. Russell shared why the role is so special to him with People: “Santa is the centerpiece of Christmas, it is the one time of the year that we are all able to get together for a good, long period of time, and have all of the things that all families have.”
We are hoping that the couple will star in another film together soon because we loved seeing them reunite on screen together!
Get Rid Of The Wedding Bells
The two have been happily together for 35 years, however they have still never gotten married. While other Hollywood couples rush to elope, these two lovebirds never felt the same need.
Hawn once commented "What is marriage going to do for us?" Despite not being married, the couple celebrates their love for one another in other, more genuine ways.
Staying Together without Wedding Vows
Many people find that wedding vows and marriage is what keeps them together. They feel insecure without having the marriage title around their relationship. Goldie and Kurt, however, have said that the fact that they never got married, is what has kept them going strong all these years.
In an interview Goldie gave with Vanity Fair, she explained that if they married long ago, they probably would have divorced by now. Goldie shared, "there's something psychological about not being married because it gives you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other. For me, I chose to stay. Kurt chose to stay, and we like the choice."
Individual Interests
In order to form a relationship as strong and as happy as Kurt and Goldie's, it requires years of support and trust in one another.
The two are very encouraging of one another and urge each other to do what makes each of them happy. Which is why their new home has a quarter for both Kurt and Goldie separately, so that they can each have a space in their home that is just for them. For Kurt, that means hunting, and for Goldie, yoga and meditation. If we could all be so wealthy, we would make a quarter for every member of our families!
A Walk To Remember
On May 4, 2017, Hawn and Russell were able to celebrate something very special together. Thanks to each having very successful acting careers, they were both awarded with stars on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. And the most amazing part about it all was that they escorted each other down the red carpet on Hollywood Boulevard and were able to celebrate the achievement together.
Many stars are talented enough to win a spot on the boulevard, but few couples are each awarded one... and to do it together, that's a whole other level of happiness. Their stars are placed right next to each other, which is a symbol of their careers and their everlasting love, two major accomplishments that they hold dear to their hearts.
Guest List Of Famous Faces
Despite not having had a wedding, the two were able to celebrate in a different way which is unique to them.
When they got their stars, several famous people were in attendance, including Reese Witherspoon and Quentin Tarantino. And Kate Hudson pulled through with a particularly emotional speech honoring her mother and stepfather.
Kate's Emotional Speech
Kate's speech brought her mother to tears. The actress joked that "I always thought I'd be talking about them at like a wedding or something. But since a wedding doesn't seem to be in our near future, ever, this may be my only opportunity. Our tribe that they created, that they so vehemently protect and defend, the relationship they fiercely refuse to lose sight of together, and the deep feeling of love and nurturing they reserve for the most important thing we have in this life, family, that's what these stars represent to me forever."
Despite that it wasn't an official wedding, the event honored both stars together, and indirectly, their undying love and devotion for one another. And what a better way to do so than with matching stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? It was a purely stunning ceremony.
Goldie's Sense Of Humor
After Kate delivered her heartwarming speech, it was Goldie's turn to step on the podium. She joked "Did we just get married?" If it's one thing that the actress is known for (besides her blonde locks, beauty, and killer body) is that she's very funny.
She continued by joking "We've never had a celebration like this before, but I'm not going to pop the question."
It Was A Good Year for Goldie
2017 was a great year for Goldie that brought with it many news things. Other than a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the actress also starred in her first movie in the last 15 years. One week following the red carpet ceremony, her movie Snatched premiered. She played alongside the comedian actress Amy Schumer.
The movie follows a mother (Goldie) and daughter (Schumer) who are abducted while vacationing in South America.
He Had A Good Year Too
Goldie wasn't the only one having a good year. Her partner, Kurt was also basking in success. He starred in some of the biggest hits of 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and The Fate of the Furious which earned over $2 billion worldwide.
Despite his enviable success, Kurt spoke nonstop about the love of his life, Goldie, during the Walk of Fame ceremony. Now that's true love, marriage title or not.
A Good Year For All
The last two years have proven to be a great few years for the whole family. Goldie and Kurt weren't the only ones celebrating success. Their kids have also been having a lot of success of their own, and continue to celebrate achievements to this day.
Kate and Oliver are each working hard on their own projects. While Kate has in the meantime taken a step back from acting, she is focusing hard on growing her fitness brand Fabletics. Her brother, Oliver, on the other hand, is currently working on the ABC sitcom, Splitting Up Together, which is being produced by the famed Ellen Degeneres.
Family Business
Kate and Oliver have a close relationship, both personally and professionally.
Oliver joined Kate in her fitness company. He is one of the designers and managers behind the men's active wear division, FL2. The business, which first launched in 2015, is perfect for the two stars who are big fans of both fashion and fitness.
Family Is Everything
One of the things that makes this family so special is that they always put family first.
They cherish one another and their relationships. While their children would love to see their parents get married, they don't push the matter and are respectful of their parents' desires. They think of their parents as great role models and want them to do what makes them happy.
Everlasting Love
Fortunately for the talented pair, they evaded the Hollywood relationship prototype of separating after a few years and have managed to stay together despite all odds. And while many couple's relationships succumb to the pressures of time and other life challenges, theirs only continues to strengthen with the years.
It's impossible to say whether the fact that they did not get married has helped them stay together. But something tells me that the two share a special bond that has helped them stay strong throughout the years. What is clear to everyone who knows them is that they are a great example of eternal love.
What's Their Secret?
So, as with any couple, especially one in the public eye, others are dying to know how they do it. "Love, gratitude, compassion, because sometimes every man or every woman will drive their partner crazy. Family. Fun. Laughs. Sex," Hawn easily answered when People asked for secrets to happy relationship. "If you don't nurture that, and remember, you're done."
And on Kurt's end, he has commented: "I very rarely worked when I knew Goldie was going to be working. And vice-versa. Which meant we could be together. I never thought that what the business could provide would ever take precedence over us." Those are some pretty powerful words.
The Perfect Words
While the two each had their own rough starts, that said nothing for how their lives would unfold. When they first met, Kurt was far too young for Goldie.
The next time they met, Kurt was completely tongue tied, and unable to formulate the right thing to say. Now, he has no problem expressing his feelings to Goldie. "To you, I owe my wonderful life. Simply put Goldie, I cherish you. All of the stars in the sky or the boulevard don't hold a candle to that. There's no one else I'd rather be next to than Goldie Hawn."
Same as Everybody Else
While they have been in the public eye for the majority of their lives, Russell doesn't think that he and Goldie are much different than other people.
"Look, I've said this for 34 years, I don't think Goldie and I, in real terms, are any different than any other couple; we go through all the same things," he explained. "But the important thing of who the two people are in a relationship is what you have to deal with. There's gonna be ups and downs and sideways and everything else ... I just think after 34 years you're gonna have experienced every emotion that you can together."
People Still Love Them
Almost three and a half decades into their relationship, and careers which have spanned more than 40 years, the two are still as adorable as the younger versions of themselves. In 2018, a remake of their 1987 film Overboard was released.
While the new version of the movie didn't receive the acclaim it did with the iconic duo, it starred Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez who are also quite adorable themselves. And while we are all waiting to see Kurt and Goldie star alongside in a film together again, we are content in the meantime seeing how loveable the couple is and their growing families.
