As Baker walked into the diner, he realized there was a long line of people waiting. He stood behind the last person standing and took the time to think about what he was going to order. When it came to choosing what to eat, life was not easy. Baker was a fussy eater and enjoyed only specific things.
He had enough time to make up his mind while standing in line. No one knew who he was — he was not in his uniform and was wearing a regular pair of pants and a top. He could be anyone he wanted to be. The time was moving slowly, and Baker found himself standing in line for more than 45 minutes. He hoped the wait was worth it.
Time for a Change
Baker had been working a 12-hour shift for the past week and was exhausted. He loved his hometown and was proud of the profession he chose in life. Alexandria, his hometown, was one of those places where everyone knew everyone, and Baker couldn't walk the streets without saying hello to someone.
Baker felt safe, he felt secure, and he hoped he was providing the same feeling to the people around him. He would soon come across the darker sides of humanity and experience an incident he didn't wish on his biggest enemies. This was a lesson in life, not just for him but for many around him.
A Change of Mind
What was about to happen would reshuffle the card, and what was supposed to be a beautiful and relaxing day was about to turn into the worst days of his life. He was next in line, and Baker was ready to place his order. The woman standing behind the counter seemed very pleasant at first.
Then, just as he was about to tell her what he wanted to eat, she looked at him with a patronizing and threatening look and seemed to be very impatient. She was chewing gum, and it looked as if this was not her best day.
Baker didn't want to let her attitude have an impact on him, and he continued to smile. He believed that if he kept a smile on his face and spoke politely and calmly, she would eventually be affected by his mindset. Baker was aware that he had a great influence on people and that many friends loved being around him because he was always happy and with a smile on his face.
Unfortunately, things were not going to work that way this time. Baker placed his order, and to his surprise, the woman behind the counter replied and said, "I am sorry, these items are not available."
Baker was disappointed, however, he already had a plan B. There was another option for him on the breakfast menu. Once again, the woman behind the counter replied and said that this, too, was unavailable. Baker was losing his patience. He stood in line for more than 45 minutes, and even now, he couldn't sit and enjoy his meal.
If he had known that they didn't have any of the dishes he wanted, he wouldn't have waited all that time and would have gone somewhere else to eat his breakfast. Baker asked the rude moman from behind the counter what they DID have, as it was too late to go somewhere else now.
