For days, Lisa walked by the shop every day after school just to look at the gown from the window and make sure no one had bought it. She stared at her perfect dress and daydreamed about what shoes it would go well with, or what hairdo would pair with it best.
Lisa even thought about the makeup she would wear, it had to match the dress’s color. She imagined what she would look like when she was ready to make her big entrance on the dance floor, feeling like a real-life Disney princess. Little did she know that getting this dress would be the first step towards uncovering a family secret that had been hidden for decades.
Considering Her Options
Lisa thought of every possible way she could pay for the dress, and obviously, the first one was asking her mom for a loan. However, Lisa knew what her mother’s financial situation was like – she saved every penny and the last thing she could afford was to buy her an expensive prom dress. It just wouldn’t be fair.
Lisa’s mom was already working two jobs to support her and her siblings and asking her for extra money was out of the question. She couldn’t be so selfish, so she started to consider other options, and suddenly thought of checking the money she had stored away in her piggy bank from babysitting jobs.
Counting Her Savings
Lisa had been putting coins and small bills inside her piggy bank for years, and she was bound to have racked up some sort of savings by now. So, she cracked open the piggy bank and went over her finances. Sadly, it was still not enough to cover even half the price of the dress. But Lisa was determined – that Cinderella dress belonged to her, and she couldn’t imagine spending her prom night wearing anything else.
She had to think of something because letting the gown go was not an option for her. Lisa dreamt about the dress, she thought of its perfect blue chiffon fabric and imagined the dress hanging in her closet. That was her dress, she just knew it.
Asking Her Mother for Advice
Lisa asked her mother for advice about her problem, hoping she could offer a solution. She told her mom about how she’d wanted to get a fairytale-themed dress and the fact that after months of looking, she had found the perfect one. She told her about the hefty price tag and asked her mom what she would do.
Her mother was a hospital nurse who was working back-to-back shifts, she was exhausted and had to take some time to sleep and think about what she could say to Lisa. She wanted to give her daughter some sound advice that would actually help her get what she wanted.
Thinking of a Solution
After getting some hours of proper rest, Lisa’s mother woke up and prepared herself some coffee. She sat at the kitchen table pondering her daughter’s problem. She always wanted to give her kids everything they wanted, and even though they didn’t come from money, she made sure they never lacked anything at home.
She went over her checkbook and realized she didn’t have the full amount for the dress that very moment, so she started to calculate how many more work shifts it would take her to come up with the entire sum. She knew Lisa had been planning her prom night for months, so she had to come up with something.
