While it’s not strictly a car movie, there are some fantastic cars in the movie and some great scenes involving cars too. In the summer of 2023, “Barbenheimer” was one of the greatest cinematic phenomenons we’ve ever seen. It saw the unlikely duo “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” go toe-to-toe in a box office clash the likes of which we might never see again.
In the very pink movie directed by Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie’s titular toy hero drives a stunning pink C1 Corvette on her way to the real world. Later on in the film, Barbie is also at the center of a pretty epic car chase after fleeing the Mattel HQ.
Days of Thunder
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are only two of the stars playing in this raging motors film, but that's hardly the best part about it. The movie also has guest appearances by actual NASCAR racecar drivers! Cruise plays Cole Trickle, a young racer intent on having a NASCAR driver, and Kidman plays Dr. Claire Lewicki, a neurosurgeon and Trickle's love interest.
The plot here might not be as groundbreaking as some might hope (it was criticized for its similarities to 'Top Gun'), but whatever it lacks in originality, it makes up for in great cars. There were even NASCAR professionals inspecting them and driving them for the racing scenes. Also, Tom Cruise is known for his preference of doing his own stunts, but in this film he had to step aside from that for insurance reasons.
Baby Driver
There has never been a car movie quite like "Baby Driver." This unique crime movie directed by Edgar Wright, sees a star-studded cast take part in what can only be described as a car criminal neo-musical. We'll explain. Ansel Elgort is the titular "Baby," a getaway driver with a pretty special power.
After developing tinnitus after a tragic car crash as a child, Baby uses the music from his iPod to great effect. He drives his car to the beats of his favorite songs, which results in some pretty amazing stunts and car chases. Other stars include Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, and John Bernthal.
Winning
This 1969 film is not half as famous as it should be, and here is why more people should know about it – let's start with how this was one of the first movies to be realistic when it comes to racing and the passion of the people involved. Then, there is the fact that this film inspired Paul Newman, who stars in it, to start a racing career of his own.
Actually, there is another film called 'Winning', a documentary, which follows Paul Newman's racing career. We can only hope that, for Paul Newman, the whole backstage intrigue depicted in the movie didn't happen in real life.
Crossroads
Let's face it - Britney Spears is never going to be remembered for her acting skills. But this didn't stop her from starring in her very own movie back in the early '00s. "Crossroads" was written by Shonda Rhimes, of all people. You know, the Shonda Rhimes who is the showrunner of "Grey's Anatomy." But we digress.
"Crossroads" sees Britney as the main character, Lucy, who goes on a cross-country trip with her friends Kit and Mimi, who are played Zoe Saldana and Taryn Manning, respectively. It was by no means the best movie ever made, but it did pretty well at the box-office and showed that Britney was more than just a pop star.
